Ebay feedback 'etiquette'

Feedback is getting more and more useless on ebay now. An example of this, looking at getting a golf club on ebay, type in make/model and see a few examples from people, check the feedback 40+ positive @ 100%, now if you looked no further you wouldn't really think anything was wrong. Check the feedback in more detail, all items are for 'private' auctions so you can't see what has been bought, and pretty much all are with users with again, 40+ feedback @ 100%. Go through all their feedback and you start to see a pattern of the same usernames leaving feedback for each other.

With regards the original question, i used to be a bit peeved when buying stuff that people didn't leave me positive feedback as completing say a 'buy it now' auction without me leaving it first, but then i just found i couldn't be bothered arguing the toss and waited for the item to arrive and leave my feedback then.

I do agree that the buyer usually puts there post first to show they received the goods and are happy - don't know why he thinks that you are stalling!

Did you tell him that you were waiting to make sure that he is happy?

Also isn't feedback a voluntary thing? you don't have to actually do it?

The seller should leave feedback as soon as payment is made imo. If the buyer doesnt leave any then so-be-it. If the buyer posts poor feedback then that is what the "respond to feedback" function is for. As a seller I always leave feedback as soon as I have been paid.

As soon as you've paid is not when the deal has been closed... so if you always leave it after payment that's a tad naieve imo. The deal is closed when the buyer has it in his hands and has emailed you to let you know it's fully working and he is satisfied. If you leave feedback straight after payment then when things go toots up you are leaving yourself wide open to malicious negging or worse.

Ebay rules even state feedback isn't mandatory, so I ignore anyone who demands I leave them it before them etc.

That's just sensible Ebaying.

Well surely there mustn't be a problem - hope it doesn't go nasty! I had someone put sarky comments on my feedback once as I didn't post the day after but a couple of days from purchase instead!

Some people just want it, and they want it NOWWWW!

Same with Feedback, and the products, and they also aren't happy unless you tell them that just by pressing "send" in PayPal, they are an A++++++++++++++++++++ "customer"!

Buyer always first whenever I eBay. The fact that he contacted you in a 'you first' kind of way would definitely make me not leave feedback until he had, very strange in my opinion.

I leave feedback on how the process went - I don't care what feedback has been left for me.
I also leave feedback as soon as the job is complete so to speak.

As a seller, once the item has been dispatched and they have taken delivery of it then I leave feedback as that is job complete.
As a buyer, once I have received the item I leave feedback on the whole process.
I always leave feedback even if/when I haven't got any (for whatever reason) and I don't play the "If you leave negative so will I" game.
If I've had bad service I shall say so - if somebody decides to give me negative just because I gave them negative so be it, I'll explain in the space provided.

EBay could greatly improve the feedback system by not allowing any feedback to become visible until both parties have left theres.
That way there is none of that "tit for tat" rubbish.

If I'm in doubt whether or not the other person will leave me postivie feedback, I will always wait for them to make the first move. Not because I am an ass, but because a lot of people are insane and will leave negative feedback because you they weren't in when the package arrived or something.

I'd say of the last 6 or 7 eBay transactions I have had, (as a buyer), in only two cases did the seller wait until I left feedback before leaving their own. I would prefer it if the vendor left their feed back once they had sent the item as by that time I have paid and thus fulfilled my side of the transaction.

Both the cases where the feedback wasn't left straight away were UK sellers with the rest being a mixture of UK and International sellers.

in theory, sellers should leave feedback when the buyer pays - at this point, the buyer has done all they are required to do for the transaction

Not really true at all - they are also required to be honest and not to pretend it hasn't arrived once it's turned up, they are required to be reasonable in any returns procedure, etc. etc.

It makes much more sense and is much fairer on both parties if both people give feedback at roughly the same time once the complete transaction has finished and you already know by email that both people are happy with it.

Unfortunately that's in a world where liars/cheats/scumbags don't exist ie: not this one.
