Ebay gone Mad?!

first time I read this I think I may have misunderstood, however, upon reading it in the article, I get the impression that its not the person being suspended who gets their negative/neutral feedback removed, but the people they have left negative/neutral feedback for (e.g. some scammer tries to buy your phone, you cancel the auction, they leave -ve feedback, 3 weeks later, they get suspended, the -ve feedback they gave you is removed)

Makes Sense :)

I don't use ebay any more... I haven't in years really since my Paypal account got borked and closed due to dodgey proceedings apparently.

Too many horror stories puts you off from going back, and actions like the "Buyers can only receive positive feedback" don't exactly help matters.

Paypal really really dislike me.

I have an email from one of their top bods saying I should take my business elsewhere as my types are not welcome or catered for by their business.

I have a copies of said email saved in a few very secure locations just in case I need it.

Elaboration is required.

I think you've misread it.

We will remove, not just de-score, negative and neutral feedback when a buyer doesn't respond to the Unpaid Item process
If a buyer doesn't respond to the unpaid item process, then they cannot leave the seller a negative feedback.

We will remove all negative and neutral feedback and comments when a buyer (or seller) is suspended. We will also do this retroactively – which means any negatives and neutrals you've received from members we've ever suspended will be removed.
If you've had negative feedback from someone, and they get suspended, the negative feedback they've given you will be removed.

Seems OK to me, or maybe I'm misreading it.

You were using paypal for something nasty? Selling Chinese slaves or something?

Not at all. Everything I was trying to do was very legitimate, legally sound and well above board. I had the relevant documentation and more than enough evidence to show them this but still they refused to honour my transactions. I was just attempting to do it in an unconventional manner - they claimed it was the first time they'd come across something like it (which I point blank refuse to believe) and given that quite a decent chunk of money was involved it went quite a way up their chain of command.

Which resulted in said email.

I think ill repost this without the obvious bios of the OP, of there inability to read the press release...

Sellers may only leave positive feedback for buyers (at the seller's option).

I know this is a huge change, but we're also putting into place protections that sellers have wanted for years. In addition to holding buyers accountable via non-public seller reporting tools, such as Unpaid Item reports, we are planning a number of other Seller Protections against inaccurate feedback:

* We will remove, not just de-score, negative and neutral feedback when a buyer doesn't respond to the Unpaid Item process
* We will remove all negative and neutral feedback and comments when a buyer (or seller) is suspended. We will also do this retroactively – which means any negatives and neutrals you've received from members we've ever suspended will be removed.
* For sellers with an established track record, we'll prevent negative and neutral feedback within 3 days of listing end to promote communication.
* We're going to reduce the number of days a member can leave feedback from 90 to 60 days.
* We'll increase block bidder list capacity from 1,000 to 5,000 user IDs.
* We'll increase our monitoring, and take action based on seller reports of buyers behaving very badly.
* Feedback percentage will be based on the last 12 months, although the total count remains lifetime. This means that any negative or neutral feedback left for you more than 12 months ago will no longer affect your percent positive.

So you can no longer get retaliatory feedback from a seller (somehting i know many people suffer with), and if a seller or buyer leaves negative feedback on your account, and they are later suspended, this negative feedback disapears from your account (not theirs).

So, ignore the bias in the OP, these are real changes for the protection of buyers from bad sellers.

I never said I was impartial...but if you had read my original post you would notice that I am actually quoting someone else on a reviews site rather than offering my interpretation on the press release, I am offering my interpretation on his interpretations :)

Fancy posting the email? :)

I don't think he's getting at you per se, rather that eBay are offering solutions to problems that ask further questions of their whole system...

As someone who buys and sells on eBay regularly I think the news is quite good.

Protection from bad buyers is already there.

If they don't pay, and don't communicate they get a strike on their account, you get your fees back and they lose a percentage on their account score, regardless of feedback.
I think 3 non payment strikes and something nasty happens, I don't recall what.

You can also block then from ever buying from you again too.

So it's hassle, and you have to wait a few days, but you don't lose anything.

The only protection you don't have is if someone buys something from you, breaks it and claims it never worked in the first place... but I can't see how that can ever be solved.

Have some kind of medium / middle man between transaction, e.g. electronics verified by a licensed eBay middle man e.t.c. before putting up for sale or before posting for is an idea I thought of awhile back but adds more hassle, time and definitely cost. But it's still an idea to go into.

That would simply never work...

made a few transactions om ebay the past week...buying and selling, when selling i just stick an extra quid on postage and that covers it :)

Not allowed to leave a neg? And clearing the peoples feedback if they have a neg? Oh my days... This is going to be a farce when selling things to people

I think maybe you should read the whole of this thread and then go and read the actual press release rather than the extremely poor quotes in the original post and then see exactly what the real changes are.

I too am a regular user of EBay from both a buying and selling point of view.
Once again I will say that in the many, many years I've been using EBay & Paypal I've only ever ended up out of pocket once - to the tune of £20 when I sent an item to an unconfirmed address.
It was near the beginning of my "Ebay Time" and I never made the same mistake again.

Personally I don't mind any of the fees associated with Paypal & EBay.
There isn't another site that can offer your items the same kind of exposure as EBay.
They are there to turn in a profit and are not running the site for the fun of it.
Don't like the fees then really quit the moaning and move on.
Personally I'll happily pay for the hundreds of thousands of potential buyers than pay a lot less for using a site where you never sell anything.

As for the changes that are being made.
If you take the time to actually read the press release and then follow the links to get the full information you'll see that there really isn't anything bad in the changes at all.
The feedback system was a joke - far too often people would leave positive feedback for fear of having their own reputation spoilt.
Other people would leave negative and spoil others reputations when it really wasn't just.

I'm certainly looking forward to the changes and will continue to use EBay & Paypal as I always have done.
I stick to my own rules:

1. Only accept Paypal
2. Only send out to a confirmed address
3. Only use a trackable delivery system for all sales >£20

By sticking to these 3 simple rules I've enjoyed many years of hassle free EBay use and never been out of pocket.
I broke one of my own rules once and get stung - won't happen again.
