eBay just removed fees for private sellers (Except motors)

I don't see what's actually changed here, ultimately the seller is still "paying" the fee, it's just that now they need to calculate it in advance and reduce their item's initial listing price to reflect, rather than have it calculated and removed post-sale.

E.g. if an item is going to sell for £20 and the fee is £2

Previously I would list it for £20, eBay would take their £2, and I end up with £18

Now I need to list it for £18 so the buyer pays £20, and I end up with £18

The last 10 years or so I've only really sold on eBay when they offer 80% off final value fees anyway, and I'm guessing this is now going to disappear, so no more eBay for me!

This is the problem with market dominance and it’s a problem only getting worse with multiple companies.

Agreed. All people need to do is vote with their feet. It's hardly a critical service, just stop using them.

Interestingly we tend to look at these problems from within echo chambers. This thread for example has a lot of disdain for the new rules, however the other millions of people out there using eBay clearly make this profitable for them.

This is a considered, researched and safe move for them I don't doubt that will result on profitability for eBay and it's shareholders.

We're just part of the profit machinery, which has been reconfigured for optimal output given current market conditions.

If ebay try and dictate sizing and weight it's going to cause issues.

It's mad how they can go from desperation offering fee free to market leader dictating postage in such a short timeframe.

There's gotta be more info to come through on this as it can't be that bad?

Yes, I remember this causing issues in the media category, where they limited postage to £1.99

That's fine if you're selling a generic CD/DVD worth a couple of £ which fits in a large letter jiffy bag. Doesn't work so well when it's a limited edition steel book which is going to cost £8 to post because it's worth £50+ and is big enough that it needs a box and bubble wrap...

Currently there are no fees.

I wouldn’t ship anything untracked on eBay anyway. You might as well just give it away if you are doing that.
Good for you! You might not, but plenty of sellers do for cheap stuff, so it's going to be annoying as a buyer if everyone starts using tracked. I'm waiting for some bleed screws for example, that were just over 2 quid. Things like this will probably double in prices.

Would you buy them from a private seller? Is it something they would sell?

Your statement does not affect what I am saying. If you are going to send it untracked you might as well just give it away.

What a slimy move by ebay.. They are probably counting on the fact that the from the influx of people triggered by no fee selling for private sellers (I count myself into that group) at least some remain after the change.
I am amazed however that they keep pushing the buyers protection agenda as it puts off sellers from even listing in first place.
I defo 2nd thr comment where a sensible alternative is needed.. Fbay is not a grwat alternative especially if you want to reach wider audience.

From the end of March you are forced to use their delivery 'service' as well. After 24 years I am done. Utter scrotum of a company.
Wait this is a big one. What does that mean?
I was stuffed when I used their delivery service. They wouldn't cover for damage. And I couldn't go to the courier direct.

I imagine you just have to buy postage on eBay directly, and you can select RM easily from there. This is probably due to it automatically uploading tracking, which would prevent many sellers from getting trapped by the 14 days thing.

Nothing more nefarious than that I'd think.

What is says. You will have to use their deliverty servcie with buyers choice of courier. I'm done selling my few bits and pieces and will only be buying anything on there if I am desperate and unable to get it anywhere else.

I just bought wiper blades on there this week and saved myself £4 rather than going to Halfrauds. I'd rather give them the money now than giving ebay a cut of the sellers profit. The place on ebay where I always got my cables for pc's have their own site and have gone down that route for years for the odd time I get something.

If they were just upping fees, I couild swallow it but this holding onto money and dictating the courier and price is a massive extraction of piddle and I ain't putting up with it. Not the end of my world and I doubt very much it is ebay's but I have principles and I stick to them.

Nope, buyer choose delivery. Ebay charges higher then RM.

The simple shipping will basically allow eBay to pick the courier and price, sellers won't have a choice. Vinted do the same.
My stepson's partner sold a load of clothes on vinted for ages, but recently got screwed over twice by them and no longer does it after buyers lies. It is rapidly becoming a sewer.
