eBay just removed fees for private sellers (Except motors)

In ebay when you get an offer price on an item you've viewed.

Is it ebay automatically doing it or the seller?

It will likely be that you list an item for X, the buyer sees X + fee, you receive X.
That makes sense, but people want to present their items at certain price points though, like £19.99 for example. This will now mean you either accept appearing at £21.48 or reduce your price to eat the fee.

I've had this quite a few times now. I can't remember if it's when I add things to my watch list or my basket to buy later, but it doesn't happen on everything.

It's the seller. When someone adds one of your items to a watch list you then have the option to send them a offer. If any others add it to their watch list you can send them a offer as well but it's only one offer per buyer even if they take it off their watch list and add it back on later. I know because I have tried it.

Seems a strange move by ebay. Business sellers where i guess the majority of ebay's revenue comes from never received the free listing, and now their prices are being forced up, or they suffer a loss of sales due to increased prices. Private sellers are now back to questioning if the sale is worth it vs say FB Marketplace.

Whilst the fees aren't high, i'm sure it'll hit ebay one way or another. They are now essentially giving their competitors like Amazon an advantage. Musicmagpie, WorldofBooks, etc who have regular buyers may just go direct now.

As mentioned low cost items like DVDs become questionable, and postage rates aren't ever going to go down.

I thought the free listing was something to strengthen their revenue through increased business selling which was always chargeable by getting more traffic.

Business seller prices will not increase the protection is included for free for them.

This is just a way for ebay to make extra money by pushing the fee onto the buyer under the guise of ‘buyer protection’

Was relatively late to the news of the buyer fee, which didn't sound like a good idea. Then a few hours later I read that they're soon gonna be holding onto sellers' money until after a confirmed delivery. Followed up by the news about forcing their delivery method onto people.

Just sounds like a mess. I certainly think my selling days will be finished after all these new rules come in.

From the end of March you are forced to use their delivery 'service' as well. After 24 years I am done. Utter scrotum of a company.

What does this mean? You can't choose what courier to use?

If they are going to take the choice of who I use to send things and where I can get them collected or dropped off, that's it for me. That's just an utterly ridiculous thing to force on to sellers.

I want to send things via Royal mail tracked with £150 compensation. I don't want to be forced to use moronic clowns masquerading as delivery companies like Evri or Yodel.

Hopefully it will help the MM. It’s been a ghost town since EBay dropped the selling fees.

Potentially. I don't see sellers listing things on eBay for less than what they would today, it's just whether buyers are happy with that price with the fee added on top.

The biggest turn off I think is the postage mandate.

It's the scummy way they've bought this in with a bait and switch.

"We're abolishing seller fees! (But we'd rather you keep your money in our account so we can earn interest on it)" I can live with.

"We're flipping our fees model upside down and forcing you to wait for delivery to get paid, into our account in the hope that you might forget about it so we can earn interest on your money forever!" (Oh btw, you have to buy postage from us).

It's quite clear that eBay are positioning themselves in defence of any situation where they might incur a cost, and to maximise profits by controlling postage, and the potential for passive income from money left in accounts.

But above all this suggests to me that the majority of folk use eBay for small purchases from sellers with multiple lot items. i.e drop ship tat from China - so this is a move primarily to appease those sellers.

As I understand it, the changes to the postage will require you to purchase postage through them, as I do already. That is, select the weight, size and provider and then they provide the label.

So it will just stop people going to the provider directly. In my case, it’s the same price to use RM through eBay as it is going direct. I purchase through eBay as it’s all connected, saves me uploading tracking info etc.

Edit - that said, the waiting for payment is something I’m not keen on. Granted, I’d keep my money in there until all was confirmed anyway but that was my choice not theirs. As others said, I’ve shifted everything I needed to and anything relevant will go in the MM.

If ebay try and dictate sizing and weight it's going to cause issues.

It's mad how they can go from desperation offering fee free to market leader dictating postage in such a short timeframe.

There's gotta be more info to come through on this as it can't be that bad?

Ebay need to introduce 'bring my label' and 'collect from safeplace', otherwise this is another shot in the foot for them.
