Ecoboost / Ecoflex engines

I'm currently in a golf 1.0tsi turbo and I'm very impressed with the engine. Plenty of ooomph for steady motoring. I also drove the fiesta equivalent about a year ago and whilst the engine was good at making progress, it did drone a lot!

I work for Ford and seen very little issues with the 1.0 Ecoboosts, the 140ps Fiesta's go like stink for what they are! Seen a few clocking up some big miles with no issues. Only problems I've seen is in the past in the Focus where a coolant hose would crack and let the engine overheat and seize up, but that was a recall and the majority have been fixed by now, not a problem on the Fiesta though.

Seen more issues with the 2.0 Ecoboost though, seen a few with melted pistons. I have one in bits on my bench at work right now out of an S-Max, although it seems to be down to turbo failure.

On the whole I think they're a great idea. Small engine that isn't dreadful to drive. They're not massively complex either.

Yea, emissions regulations are slowly killing them off. Which is dumb because turbo engines are actually worse when under load :/

Just shows the level of intelligence by governments. They are slowly killing off cars in general. They don't want us having fun!

That's the stupid irony of emissions/mpg testing. I had the old 981 boxster as a courtesy car last year. It was a 2.7 n/a and I was managing 40mpg cruising down the motorway, I bet the new ones will be hardly any different. Also the fiestas 1l are 3 cylinder, not sure what the gold is.

Am I right in thinking vehicles are not even the main contributer of polution? Is that true even for cities?

I had a 1L Fiesta when my ST was in, it's not as economical as they make out. In the real world it was only getting something like 5mpg more than my ST was and slow as hell (I think it was the 125hp one). It just felt like it was struggling all the time.

Do you know if there's anything in particular that causes this?

People have been having loads of issues with the 2.3 in the mk3 Focus RS as well. They should have stuck with the 5 cyl Volvo engine IMO :)

Were you driving it like an ST replacement though, or were you driving it like Miss Daisy doing the weekly trip to Tesco?

They're designed to be economical pootling around town at 30mph, rather than flying down dual carriageways at 80mph and hitting 30mph as fast as possible from every set of lights :p

look at rally cars of yesteryear 500bhp monsters.all there times are smashed now by 1.6 320bhp cars.the small big bhp cars are the future just easier to drive.

Mine still does 40mpg when I do that though :D

tbh thats as much down to tyre and suspension developments as actual power, the modern stuff might have less power but they can actually put that to the road.

It must have been the 99bhp one, as the 125bhp is plenty quick enough. I hate to imagine what you would think of actual slow cars like the old 1.25 then with its 70bhp or so.

The Mrs has a 2012 1.0 Ecoboost Focus on 101,000 miles now, have only owned for 7000 miles/6months. Been serviced every 6months from new and is still running strong, not a single issue with the engine so far. Average 39.7MPG doing 30miles each way on M25 commute plus the odd short trip to the shops. Very impressed with it, hopefully it stays reliable!

39mpg from a 1 litre petrol, doesn't sound all that impressive to me for mostly motorway. My old 1.6 focus averages 45mpg, 49 on a longer run.

My wife's focus st mk 3 gets 35 on the motorway, it's not that much of a saving for so much less power.
