Ecu remap causing faults. Thoughts?

I reckon a lot of remapping issues are caused by not doing dyno runs in conjunction with ecu adjustments. Tweaking the files and the customer driving off is like playing roulette imo.

It's like overclocking a pc and not running benchmark tests.

Your file writer is not custom editing these files... They just send you their file from The most recent catalog.

I hope you have liability insurance... Heck even I have that and I just fix peoples phones.

@BBT quiet, Dave.

Personally, I've only ever had two"off the shelf remap" and wouldn't do it again. My SRT8 right now is custom mapped and been on a dyno etc. My RX8 was, my Saab was all custom tuned taking hours to get to the right point.

The first off the shelf was on my Jag Diesel, it overloaded the torque converter and screwed that up... however, the engine blew weeks alter so... no thanks to that.
The second one was on the SRT8 which basically made it run crap and I got my money back...

So, for me, I'm running my SRT8/Saab 93 and RX8'sand they've been A1 perfect in all the years I've owned them all.

One of them, sure off the shelf maps are fine but they're just that... off the shelf and if your car has a weakness, they won't cater for that is all and could cause problems. PLUS putting a map like the OP on a 200k is tbh insane. No way would I ever do that!

What kind would you guys recommend though
I have a Honda and I'm considering ECO+ from https://bswcautoremapping.co.uk/

Personally I would recommend not bumping a near 18 month old thread about a remap possibly causing issues with a BMW, on a computer forum, apparently full of anti-remap weirdos, as your second post, to ask for advice about remapping a "Honda". :p

But thats just me...

Already reported another account spamming the same link this morning

Most stock cars with a remap are off the shelf files, nothing really wrong with this. Peoeple saying there map is "custom" because its been on the Dyno have been duped, pretty much every stock ecu wont allow real time adjustments, there for most remapping companys simply wont spend all day adjusting file after file while doing dyno run after dyno run.

So many "tuned" diesels go bang. Probably puts to much stress on the DPF etc (not exactly the most robust components to begin with), then once that starts to die other things start to fail.

Ive had all my diesels remapped that I have ever owned without issue. The big v6 turbo diesels respond very well to them esp since quite often the manufacturer has two or three models where the engines are identical except for the ecu which gives them different power.

Yep agreed unless you get into the pure settings which you need to be a rocket scientist anyway. It takes hours, I had to leave my Saab with Aura tuning for hours for them to get my map right.

Did the OP ever update this?
nope would be interesting to find out, im guessing he either had to pay some money or bmw found a unrelated fault.

either way its not nice , but its a risk you take when dealing with the public. if he still is doing his tuning, i hope he has learnt his lesson, when a customer gives off a certain vibe, by either asking too many questions or seemingly knows too much about the job your doing ,its sometimes better to just walk away and let them jog on.

had it a few times over the years and only had (touch wood )) one attempted problem. guy turns up and explains hes a friend of a customer and his new bmw dash is dead.....quite correct.

when looked into a bit more deeper his dash has been out , seal broken and someone fitted a blocker inside...showed him the unit looked like a monkey soldered it in. he immediatly starts the blame game, he cant get warranty because i broke the seals and i must have mucked it up, hes going to bmw and i will pay the bill, off he goes.

i sent my mate at bmw all the details of the vehicle and the photos i had.

my mate comes back within 20 minutes with i quote `wondered who he would go to when we told him he had no warranty` just another scam artist never heard from him again....

too many chancers who want champagne motors on lemonade money.....and find anyone to blame if it goes wrong:)

@BBT What happened in the end?

As for remaps causing damage, this is why it's important to choose the mapper correctly.

There are some out there removing all the ECU's fault codes and failsafes to achieve the desired result without throwing codes every 5 minutes. While there are others that understand it better and are providing OEM quality maps with just a bit more boost/fuel pressure etc.

What gets me is the people that slate OTS maps and then proclaim that a custom map is the only way to do it properly, despite the car being stock. But the car came with an OTS map from factory and the good OTS maps are subject to development cycles both in-house and with early customers leaving you with a far better job than a custom map.

That said, most "custom" maps are an OTS job accompanied by a dyno run anyway :D:cry:

@BBT What happened in the end?

yes very interested but not sure we will get a reply after this length of time:)

one last point if i may i also have the equipment to remap vehicles but dont have access to a rolling road or dyno, hence why i never do them, it seems from the op that he didnt have access either ..in i wrote the map and it started and idled ok and the guy drove off....

why would you take your vehicle to get it remapped without having it checked on a dyno ?? answer ...because you are looking at getting it cheaper.

when in business you have all the insurance and backup for problems like this, im not fully blaming the op some of the risk must fall on the customer, for chancing it, but ill hazard a guess this didnt end well for the op (hope im wrong).
ots maps are fine 99% of the time but its better if you have sight of the motor and the backup to test it as you do it , one bmw x5 map may not work on another poorly maintained vehicle and may stress components.
