Eddie Van Halen dead at 65

The story around that is he was asked to do a solo, he turned up with his guitar and amp, listened to what he was playing over and that was the first take and he went home.

Yes, that is such a wonderful story. It gives me chills every time I listen to it, and when he ends the solo? My goosebumps get goosebumps.

Bach's Tocatta

Yes, that’s it. Sounds glorious on an electric guitar.

Ahhh damn RIP Eddie :(.

Grew up listening to his music when I was going through a heavy rock/metal phase.

My favourite Van Halen track was jump.

Around 11 minutes, and in brief perfumes near the end, there was a beautiful masterly artistic allusion confident of the promise of the gold of the stairway of heaven. But it is different, in the beautiful way, because his attitude to it is one of confession - 'the gold, it exists, I have experienced it, it is beautiful, it is ok, dont be afraid.' A magnificent performance, Eruption, and the first time Ive seen or heard it. It is the death of an Artist.

RIP EVH - one of the original guitar heroes; I'll always remember when I started learning guitar one of the magazines had a thing about the Ice Cream Man solo and it blew my mind someone could do that on guitar when I was struggling just to get my hands to behave and make the basic chord shapes. I wasn't a hardcore Van Halen fan but enjoyed many tracks and appreciated Eddie's part in inspiring the virtuoso players of the 80's/90's who themselves would go on to inspire so many people to pursue excellence and creative approaches to playing electric guitar.

I only knew of him from that incredible few moments of time he had in Beat it and of course Jump! Just from that I could tell he was seriously talented. Sad news indeed.

In 1978 I was standing right at the front at Victoria Hall Hanley and every time he did a solo he turned around :)
He used to do this on purpose.

I know there is weird conspiracy theories all the time but I was watching back to the future last night and Marty uses a tape of Van Halen to dupe George he is an ET. Funny how that always seems to happen.

Never really on my playlist, and I've an allergy to the whole shredding thing (like, too many notes, man... they'll still be there in the morning, no need to use them all now!) but I grew up listening to Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show, so Van Halen is a name and playing style etched in my musical DNA.

I know a lot more about him as a man now than I did 24 hours ago, and he sounds like a decent chap, despite what you might expect from Rock Stars (capitals most definitely required) of that era. I'll plug my electric guitar in today and pose in front of the mirror for a moment in tribute. The only shredding going on around here though will be in the marmalade jar.

RIP.

Van Halen aren't among my immediate go-to bands in this genre, but you can't but admire EVH's creativity and technical prowess. He set the standard for a lot of modern guitarists. Shredding aside, this is one of my favourite Van Halen tracks:

RIP.
