I do wonder how much better much more expensive speakers would be. I am not really interested in how loud they go, the M3's more than loud enough for desktop pc imo.

I went this route a while back and bought the KEF LS50 Meta and whilst they are more modern than my Q300, they were nowhere near as enjoyable as my ~12yr old Q300s for both music and gaming. You must have a sub with those LS50s and yeah the cabinets are a little bit smaller with smaller drivers but even still, you expect a certain level of punch at £1000 for a pair of speakers. I returned them a week later and will just forever keep the Q300s until they die or something.

You get to the point of diminishing returns at a certain level and that level doesn't really have a minimum price bracket because you can get super high end audio performance without spending much at all these days which was not the case in the past typically.

LS50 have a marmite sound, can be very hard on the ears. Hard to drive, inefficent and need a sub and high passing them essential.

Driving them wasn't an issue, nor was the sound, classic KEF combined with NAD "sound" which I am used to and prefer, it was the lack of punch which makes sense as they are smaller cabs and woofers, but for £1000 they did not represent the kind of upgrade I would call worth the money, even adding at least another £200 on top for a sub I could not see them outdoing my Q300s as an all round great speaker that doesn't care about positioning or distance from a wall etc.

To my ears they are overhyped and overpriced.

@mrk how would you say based on specs and having had a go on the M60 would you say they compare to the M3's?

I know hard to say exactly. But is there something the M3's have missing that yours has that would make a big enough difference?

Not heard the MR3 so can't say but the M60 has custom 6 band EQ which saves to them so you can tune the freq response you like via the app. Long throw driver also means bass is louder than you'd think given the size.

Another alternative is a streamer with room EQ built in, ie Wiim pro/plus/ultra. I use the PEQ function with UMIK1, and allows multiple presets also.

You should only really be buying small speakers if you need the space, as small drivers (even if you aren't pushing them) suffer from high intermodulation distortion when they're covering a full range signal.

For around £300 at a similar size to the MR3, the Adam D3V's (3.5") would be a good step up, but for the same price the larger T5V's for example are significantly better, even at moderate volumes.
