I have two PCs that I connect to via RDP. Both are running Windows 10.

One has the options to shut down and restart, the other doesn't.

I'm not aware of anything I did to the first one to make them show and I can't find anything to tell me how to do it.

How can I enable these options on the second system please?

I built them both myself, they're fresh out of the box installs from USB sticks created by the Windows Media Creation tool thingie. I haven't tweaked any policies.

You 100% sure they're the same Windows 10 build?
Not at all, I never claimed they were. One is old (but I do all the updates I'm offered), one was built yesterday.

The version numbers are odd. The older one which has the options says this:

The newer one which I built last night using an image created using the Windows media creation doofer says this:

That looks older to me

OK, I'm doing the updates, thanks.

Update the old one and you'll get the options, why are you running such an out of date build?
Yesterday I ran the Windows Media creation tool which generated me a USB stick which is what I used to install. I didn't chose the version, it's just what installed.

Oh for crying out loud. People wonder why I dislike Windows so much.

I've spent all day getting this set up using a Windows installer I downloaded from Microsoft yesterday.

After the above, I ran Windows update but it wouldn't update so I did it through the web site.

So everything I've done today has been wasted. I've got to recover the PC from the rack (it's headless) and plug a monitor, mouse and keyboard back into it so that I can effectively start again from scratch.

Pathetic, absobloodylutely pathetic. :mad::mad::(:mad:

I really don't get it. It's Windows 10 updating Windows 10. Why on earth can't it manage what should be a relatively simple task without effectively installing a complete new OS?

It means I've wasted an entire day today and tomorrow will be a write off as well. It's not as though it's easy for me at the moment, I've still not got a huge amount of movement in my right arm and it's going to be difficult to get the PC back onto a desk and typing/using the mouse isn't easy either.

I've downloaded the iso direct from Microsoft but when I run setup, I get through and still get this.

So no, I have no other option. I'm screwed.

WTVF?

Windows 10 HOME???

I'm using Pro. I just used the Media Creation tool to download an .iso and told it Pro. It wants to install Home.

I'm losing the will to live.

are you in a position
No.
I'm fed up with this crap now, I've spent too much time on it already.

I'm just running the installer as I'm 100% certain the image has Pro on it. When I give it the product key, I hope it'll activate the correct version.

Run the tool and save the ISO to your PC somewhere. Double-click it to mount it as a virtual drive then try running setup.exe from within in.
Done that. It's no different. @Vince, it's done through the media creation tool. You get an option to save as .iso.

Anyway, I now have the latest version but I have another issue.

The hardware has a digital licence for Home. When I enter my product key for Pro, it says "thank you very much" and leaves me at Home.

I was on Pro before. The key I have is for Pro.

How do I persuade Windows to give me the version I've got a key for?

I used slmgr to remove the digital licence, added my key back and it gave me Home and a digital licence again.

Time to give ms licensing a call? if you log into your windows account online does it show you any license details?
I don't have a Window account.

I think I've figured out what went wrong to start with - I have a Windows 8 VM with the media creation tool already on it.

I assumed that the media creation tool would always go away and download the latest version. That makes sense, right? It seems not. It is hard coded to a specific version of Windows and that's the one it'll always download. On the positive side, it did allow me to add my key which gave me Windows 10 Pro, even though it was an old version.

I've just downloaded the latest version of the media creation tool which even has 1909 in the filename (the old version I had didn't have any indication of this) and am writing a USB stick now. I hope that this will give me the correct version and allow me to input my key during installation.

The obvious answer to everything is that sadly Windows hates you :(
The feeling is mutual.

Insert inevitable 'It's so much easier on a Mac' comment here.
It is though. One version of the OS, no key, no charge. Earlier versions update to later versions with no problems like this. Microsoft can't even get an update from Windows 10 to Windows 10 right.

It might be easier but then you have to buy fruit based tech products and be tied to that. Fruit based is never the way forward.
Everything here is Apple and this has reminded me why!
This particular PC is going to be a Plex server and I originally wanted to run Ubuntu but because I'm using a DAS Drobo for storage, that's not really practical. The Drobo isn't officially supported under Linux and using ext4 on a Drobo is asking for trouble.
I wish I'd bought a Mac mini instead of the Optiplex I'm using, it would have been so much easier.
