EMA to stop?

I also think it would be better if it was not given in the form of money, it should be vouchers to buy text books and transport paid for, etc. Otherwise it'll just be treated as an incentive to stay at school, which is completely useless to society as a whole. If someone is only staying in education because it's easy money, they won't go on to do something productive with what they have learned, hence it was pointless them being in education in the first place.

and say for example your bag breaks, vouchers for books arent going to be useful in that situation

oh, and btw, while you were on the EMA line (between jobs) weren't you stealing tax payers money? as far as i know is govt funded, which means your pay came out of others taxes, i smell hypocrisy.

hardly, its called earning a living. i.e. being paid for work done. or as some people say GET A JOB YOU DAMN HIPPY!

I didn't have EMA at college.

To make sure i could afford things guess what i did?

I GOT A JOB!

FFS, get rid of EMA.

That's usually what's focused on, and the people who need it are neglected on these forums :(
I hear what you're saying, and I reckon you think the argument against EMA is largely a right-wing one. But I don't think that's the case, I think if you're going to give out free money, then at least give to everyone - that would be the more liberal attitude.

There'd be no point in focusing on the good points of EMA, what sort of an argument would that be? ;) :p

EMA is the biggest joke ever (I might have a different view if I had got it but ah well)

I wasnt able to get EMA because my parents income was slightly over the amount allowed. The thing that I dont understand is the people who do get it 90% of them dont spend the money on what it is given for ie books, transport etc. Its not like my parents gave me £30 a week to spend on this kind of thing.

EMA should be some sort of vouchers you can only spend on books or transport or be paid directly to the parents. It will stop it being spent on drink, fags, phones, track suits etc

Or like i just stated above do what most people did when i was at college. WORK.

What is so hard about that?

My wife was in the same boat as you, and worked her way through college.

I'm a bit more lenient, and think it's OK for people who need it and use it for the intended purpose, but unfortunately all I've seen of it is people buying cigarettes and CDs.

But I'm a poor little student who suffers on having to buy £30 textbooks for my subjects every single week of course, and If I didn't have the money then how would I be able to afford to live? Without EMA I wouldn't be able to survive. lol.

EMA is very helpful, but not for education purposes, for travel yes but it is a bit far fetched on how they justify it really. Although saying that my mums household income was £0 on the last tax form.

If my EMA stops I won't be able to

- Pay 6th form fees
- Buy my travel card to go to 6th form (I travel by train, it's the only way to get there)
- Buy A4 Pads and Graphic Paper which I desperately need
- Buy materials for my Graphics Coursework

Sure at the end of it I get £4 spare but it just shows not everyone is the sterotypical "lets spend money at OcUK" student as dictated by others in this topic.

Here in london its even worse because mayor Ken has made transport on the buses free for kids ... under 18's i think it was ... so EMA wouldn't need to go on transport costs if you got a bus every day ... leaving more for books if you are serious about your education or just more to blow on whatever rubbish is the thing to have etc

Nobody is doubting that there are some people that deserve it, but the fact is that the criteria are so ridiculous that the majority of people who receive it don't deserve it.

So?! Get a job!

However, if your dad/mum is ludicrously rich and divorced, and you live with the other half. If they work in a charity shop or something due to getting so much money from the settlement then you get full EMA :/

Some of the richest people in my year get full EMA(30/wK).
