EMA to stop?

So?! Get a job!

i have a job, the main idea for EMA is so that students wont need to get a job to fund their way through college, therefore (supposedly) they will be able to concentrate more on their studies and hopefully get better grades...and yes...i know it fails to do this in most cases, perhaps they should lower payments? £20/ £10/ £5?

thats not true, i go to college because i want to further myself, i also intend to go to uni, and EMA facilitates me on that life choice

oh, and btw, while you were on the EMA line (between jobs) weren't you stealing tax payers money? as far as i know is govt funded, which means your pay came out of others taxes, i smell hypocrisy.

Actually it was a job through an agency who recruited for Capita who ran the EMA that year (not sure if they still do). The system is wrong I remember speaking to a lad who was living on his own with a job to support himself and he wanted EMA. I couldn't give it too him as he HAD A JOB. The only way he could have qualified was to quit and go on jobseekers allowance! Tell me is that right?

Good if it is!

Maybe instead they can give it to schools with express orders for it to pay for text books for 6th former so they dont have to buy them. And any left over goes to paying for bus passes for people further away. That way it would be used for what it was designed for while helping everyone and saving money at the same time.

So what if some poor chav who goes to school only for this cant buy his cigs and drink with it. GET A JOB!

I know there are worthy people who need ema and actually spend it on what it is designed for (well one or two of them), this isnt aimed at them, just the rest.

ROFL you should write government policy. Hang on, your idea makes to much sense they would never pass it!

If my EMA stops I won't be able to

- Pay 6th form fees
- Buy my travel card to go to 6th form (I travel by train, it's the only way to get there)
- Buy A4 Pads and Graphic Paper which I desperately need
- Buy materials for my Graphics Coursework

Sure at the end of it I get £4 spare but it just shows not everyone is the sterotypical "lets spend money at OcUK" student as dictated by others in this topic.

And my idea would help you in every way whilst still sorting out the majority of the problems.

-6th form fees (never heard of them  ) would be paid directly from the money given to the schools.
-Travel card would be given to you free, maybe with strings attached, such as only allowed to travel to and from school with it (so its cheaper for the school)
-Pads and paper would be given to you (and every 6th form student by the school, maybe with a set limit of 3 pads a year unless you can proove you used them for work).
-My sister does Art at A level and gets most of her stuff through the school anyway, that would be paid by said money by the school. The school could set up a connection with a shop in the area too so the bills for things bought there for your course are charged directly to school.

A lot of that is set up in schools anyway (such as partnerships with specific shops for student discounts) so there wouldnt be much cost involved in setting it up and that cost would almost certainly be a lot less than the savings made. :)

The EMA kids should just get a free bus pass.
I was sick of people having more money than me just because their parents had crap jobs or were lazy.

Anyone who says they need the EMA is wrong. Get a job like the rest of us. :)

I only claimed it because I could, I didn't need it, no one is going to turn down free money! Also, while I was at college I worked and claimed the EMA, so I'm not sure where some people are getting the idea that you have to be out of work to claim it.

I hope they are stopping it. Complete and total waste of money.

Yep ^^

Thing is when i was at college most people had jobs they had to do after college and at the weekends.

Now, a few of my friends who are at college, don't work, don't feel they need to work, or even want to work. All because they get their EMA every week.

It's wrong.

I feel as if I dont need to work because I get EMA every week and the nice £100 bonuses.

But I dont waste the money I get, it goes into my bank account and sits there and then I transfer it to a 4.75% savings account. So not all students waste this free money we get.

I don't really waste mine either. So far I've bought some clothes, textbooks and some lunch.

Or like i just stated above do what most people did when i was at college. WORK.

What is so hard about that?

Most places now will only hire you if you're 18 or over and any I have found that are ok with me being under that conflict with college/travelling. For example I was looking at some part time workat a courier firm but it starts at five which means I have no chance of getting to it on time. Had a look in the co-op; sorry only over 18s etc.

I only get £10 a week from EMA, £6.50 bus fees and if I bought lunch then a fair bit more than £3.50a week considering the rip off prices at our cafe.

Oh I had a job.

I meant money for nothing.

Edit: Hurrrr why don't EMA kids get jobs then? That's a stupid point.

Edit 2: @ Jihad. You get EMA then yeah?

Eh?
Most high street shops and supermarkets hire sub-18's?

And guess what, they aren't looking for anyone when I ask

Good thing that ema is stopping though, people who have parents that are on the dole, self employed or divorced get tons of money, while the people who work hard and deserve it don't get anything because their parents earn just over the combined £30k bracket.

My parents are none of those things and they don't get tons of money, but hey let the people who could do with it suffer it stops other people abusing it. I guess you don't get EMA?

Getting a job when your at school 30 hours a week isnt really an option, it's even been shown that grades usually suffer because of it.
