EMA

I'm 16 and I'll be going to college or sixth form in september- but my dad earns over 30k a year so I'm not entitled to EMA. I think this is wrong as most people on EMA will only spend it on booze etc and they don't have to work! I have a part time job and I will be needing to buy travel and books etc.

Will I get found out if I only put my mum's income so I will be entitled to £30 a week?
Not all people spend it on booze and crap, my girlfriend saved it all and now it's helping her pay for uni :)

Oh and no, don't try to commit fraud, you most probably will get caught and hung up by your balls.

very successful people children would be in a private school and so would have their school equipment provided in their fees more than likely.

That's a generalisation and again bares no consideration towards people and their disposable income. Also not all books are provided in private schools.....

Sorry if this has already been said, but in July the laws change, and every 1 up to the age of 18/19 wil get ema

It just beggars belief to be honest. Ever so slowly the nation is being weaned onto handouts.

What puzzles me is how do some of these kids fill out the forms when some universities are offering remedial maths and English for new students!

I'd rather have parents earning over 30k combined, which really isn't an insane amount, than receive £30 a week via EMA.

some peoples parents earn over 30k and they dont see a penny of it, they do not see college as a feasable option and believe their kids need a job.

Its silly really, Although my parents have always funded me while im in education its not that way for everyone.. so you get people who have to work 6-7hours a week to get this £30, and the people on EMA often get attendance bonuses of a few hundred quid dont they? Joke tbh, too easy to fiddle too, You wouldnt get found out most likely if you said you were with your mum, a lot of people I know have claimed max EMA/bursaries due to seperated parents, and they usually have doctors for dads who throw money at them whilst the government does too

I don't really care if people spend the EMA on fags and booze, what annoys me is the people who go to college and doss just because they get EMA for a certain amount of attendance.

i used to get £50 a month off the parents and eat their food etc, mind you I was a bum at college so I cant moan about any people being bums too, its just they got £120 to be bums when I only had £50, if someones parents earns under 30k they still have plenty enough to buy food etc and feed their kids.. if its both parents earning under 30k(a lot I knew were single parents) well.. theyll most likely get other bennefits wont they?

Exactly!

I got EMA as my mum didnt earn over a certain amount (cant remember what it was) and all i did was spend it on beer and weed:D:((probably why i cant remember!:p)

Believe it or not, but EMA was designed with parents in mind.

The thinking behind it was that parents who are worse off and scraping by would be selfish and sacrifice the education of their children to go out to work full-time at 16 to bring some money into the house instead of furthering their education to get decent jobs. EMA was designed to give these selfish parents both well educated children AND money into the household.

@ OP: As most people on here are saying, if you're parents are on over 30k, like mine were, then what the hell are you whining about? You would rather have parents with no money so you could make £1500/year? Hmmm. I didn't get it, and I didn't miss it either, I still had more money than my mate who was on the same college course as me who got EMA AND worked more hours than me, because my parents didn't ask for rent or any money at all while I was in full-time education. They get child-benefit while I was in full-time education.

IMO, EMA is fair, and that's coming from someone who didn't get it at all. Its use may be questionable, but then those getting it will probably be charged rent by their parents.

If EMA is designed to help parents who would prefer money from their offspring to help with bills etc., why is it not paid to the parent?

And the whole point is, is that just because your parents earn over £30k PA does not mean that you suddenly get the equivalent spent on your education. What's the difference between £29,999 PA and £30,001 PA? Does that £2 really mean you will get an equivalent of £30 spent on your education every week?

Exactly. My parents' income combined was just over the limit I think for me to be eligible for EMA, nor was it high enough for them to be able to afford to give me £30 a week. If my parents hadn't have worked harder and didn't do overtime we'd probably be better off with the extra benefits we'd have been given.

What about the people that spend it on fags and booze and still only attend college to in order to clam EMA !?!?

EMA being means tested is just wrong. Either every kid at college should get it or nobody should.

Edit that to EMA is just wrong :(, why should people be payed to go to college? i didnt and managed fine so why should they get free alcohol every week? Cos that is exactly what they spend it on, there is no need for EMA at all

when they say remedial, it's of as level, not sub gcse standard.

Also with EMA, if you missed one day you lost the whole weeks pay..

Surely students of university "standard" should be able to spell correctly, I remember one university saying that it ran these courses for people taking maths and English degrees!

yeah, their to bring everyone up to the same standard.

And

Thats an epic load of bull, I use the spell check on almost every other word on here, and my spelling in real life is absolutely horrible. However I'm doing a science degree, and so everything I need to write in exams is either nice and phonetic or doesn't need to be put in words of any real complexity.

The remideal maths course here, so us is a mixture of As, and a bit of A level maths, and is just to make sure anyone who didn't do them, or just needs to get back into it after the long summer holidays.

As for the English, they don't do that for my course here, but others (which are more coursework/essay based) do and it too is of As/A level standard and isn't about spelling, it's about all the grammar/writing styles/extra detail on how to write essays etc.

It's only called "remedial" in relation to the work they will be doing on their course.

If your household earns over 30k why do you want 30 pounds a week? Seriously. I get the £30 and one of my friends is constantly moaning that he doesn't recieve it.
