Embarrassed like nothing else

i really don't understand why the op didn't open and check the monitor before taking it to the customer. sure, if this was some build they were doing for a mate it would make a bit more sense but when building a pc as a business entity you surely got to check the goods before supplying to the customer.

Yeah as above, that's extremely childish. Every adult knows that stuff can turn up damaged. You do the adult thing though and get in touch with whomever sold it to you to arrange for a replacement.

Maybe you need to deal with his parents instead?

The guy needs to pay someone to build him a PC. He is not worthy anyway.

I remember when I used to get my kids Christmas or birthday toys. I'd always open and test the product first before wrapping it, the thought of something being faulty when opened on Xmas morning was unbearable.

This happened to me as a child. I had the Calsonic Nissan Tamiya RC car as my main present and it was missing the parts for the rear diff and gears. I wouldn't want any child to go through that!

Maybe it’s how we’re reading it. For me, if someone says “is this a joke” it’s pretty much like someone saying “you got a problem?” It’s a precursor to aggression. Each to their own.
Indeed whereas I'm reading it as a bit of a "haha is this a joke" because that's probably what I would say. The joys of text based communication :D

I do PC builds as a hobby, it's not my real business. I know him to an extent, not a total stranger. I wanted him to get to open the monitor box, so that he felt a part of the process. He was miffed as he couldn't get to have a proper play with his new toys.

We've spoken since and he doesn't blame me at all. He was just gutted he couldn't have a go with his new stuff. He has a new PC tower crammed with new tech...and no way to use it. I'd be p'd off too if I couldn't use the new PC, but his annoyance wasn't a personal hit on me, more so the situation.

His old monitor is blue VGA cable so doesn't fit into the 4060 card.

I’d suggest his reaction was reasonable enough. Like you he probably wondered how a completely sealed box with no damage could contain such a messed up screen. And then it was the only bit of kit u brought him to unbox . It’s not beyond the thought process to think that this guy is having a wind up, has sealed the box up himself, and has the real screen in the boot of the car to bring into me in a minute.

The same people used to buy their kids electronic Christmas presents in the 90s and not test if they worked ;) or even needed batteries.

Anyway if you can't build your own PC, then you don't deserve one :)
