Ask Jules Bianchi about that.

Yeah I know :(
But sometimes I feel it is OTT when they are off line and never going to get hit.

F1 is so technically calculated and conditioned to account for wear levels of engine/fuel/tyres that safety cars whether full or virtual, just completely adds a lottery element to an otherwise competitive sport in all - even minute detail - areas. I'm surprised we still accept it. Virtual safety cars were brought in to eradicate this lottery issue but since they allow pit stops under these conditions, it makes it completely pointless.

We would not accept random grid starts each week as it's a lottery and makes competitive racing pointless. So why do we accept safety cars affecting the race outcome? We have the facilities to fix this with proper delta time management and no pit stops. I'm surprised we have not had another Renault safety car saga.... remember when they deliberately crashed causing one? We probably have had something but it's gone undetected. It also happens in quali when people push too hard during the final few minutes, go off track and ruin everyone else's laps. Has happened quite a few times. The same debate is actually being had in motogp right now where quali has been affected by having to lift X amount under yellows and what is considered a lift etc. Farce.

Stroll is getting worse

This is the first time all season he's finished a race outside the points (when he finished). The first half of his season was really good, all he's had two bad races, and a string of bad luck. Bit soon to be writing him off. In Tuscany, he suffered a car failure which cost him what otherwise would have been a consecutive podium, in Russia he had car problems in Quali and then was punted out by Leclerc on the first lap, he missed the Eiffel GP with Corona.

Certainly plausible but it's not clear how much time he saved with the VSC and he was only about 3.5s clear as it was which seems to suggest to me that he wasn't.
This was talked about at the time, I seem to remember them saying something about Bottas being able to put the power down early as the VSC had ended and where the safety car line was, what the Saftey car line has to do with it I dont know, but it supposedly meant Bottas was fully up to speed and only being slightly compromised by VSC, ending up a lot closer than he would have otherwise been.

Also bare in mind that Lewis had a bit of a slow stop, all of which combined explained the smaller time gap than expected under VSC, had he pitted under normal circumstances with that gap he had, He'd have likely only been ~1sec in front without the scrappy stop, and would have been touch and go with it or even possibly behind.

Don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread but just heard on the news on the radio that Toto had said Lewis will not retire at the end of this season.

Of coarse he won't.

Hamilton wouldn't put pen to paper because Merc laid off 5,000+ people
and he thought it would be bad asking the $40m a year contract.

Then a few months later Hamilton said that now Merc are selling cars again and profits are up.
He is going to sort out his contract.

Hamilton says he is leaving to get more cash.
I would call his bluff asap.

Was a shame that vsc. As Hamilton haters will latch onto it saying he lucked into it. But he had the gap

Shame we will never know if Bottas was just poor or the damage was bad enough to be the excuse. But have seen this of Bottas before with inferior tyre management to Hamilton

Albons interview was cringe. 'I'm sure I was punted' and 'I don't think it was too bad'.
Lovely guy. But terrible.
If he's lucky he will go to the alpha team. If he does well there.. Questions have to be asked of red bull.

Is max genuinely brilliant? Or is it just a terrible environment for a second driver?

Still baffled by RP decision. Its not even an 'in hindsight' moment. No one was going to put so close to the end

I wish ocon wasn't in for 2021! He's lucky he DNFed. Imagine how far behind Renault would be if it was Riccardos car with that amount of failures

If you set the player to 0.5x as it starts the slow-mo replay, you can see the inside edge of the tyre starting to let go before he's anywhere near the kerb.

2/10 Another boring race. Cracking track to drive but terrible for racing. Bad Obsession's race in the Citroen C1 was better than this. Albon confirming yet again that he has no business being in F1 and the sooner he goes the better. How on earth did Sainz not hit him!! Poor Gasly, he was doing so well up to his retirement from the race and the Alpha Tauri seemed to be very good at this circuit.

I dont think they can afford to, driver prospects for next year at short notice are far from ideal for a top team like Merc. With the RB looking more competitive in the hands of Max theres every chance they will be genuine title contenders next year, I wouldnt put any faith in Bottas securing a title in the absence of Lewis.
I think the one saving grace is that he was around when Rosberg quit and saw what turmoil that caused the team, I like to think that he respects the team well enough not to put them in that **** position again.
My guess? It will be a short term contract probably just the one year possibly two years max. With a rethink when the future of the team, new regs and how the new cars performs against the competition etc come more apparent. I'd also like to think he'll leave them with a clear succession plan, for example a year of bringing on russell or something of the like.

Merc would get Max in a heart beat if they wanted to.
Then get Russell as well.

Two you drivers leading the way.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Max in a Mercedes in 2022 now; even if Red Bull succeed in getting the Honda engine the development is doing to be zero.
Hamilton seems genuinely like he wants to do things outside F1 and I expect him to maybe stay for another couple of years at most (that said there are other world champs who go on about giving up but then keep going - Ronnie O'Sullivan for example).

I suspect if Max is available for 2022 and Lewis is still there then Max and Lewis will line-up in 2022 with Bottas punted; with Russell getting a year in a mid-field team before presumably lining up with Verstappen in 2023; lets be honest - Toto can express the opinions he wants but Mercedes board and never going to put George Russell in ahead of Max Verstappen if they can get him

Have Pirelli blamed anyone else yet for another one of their tyre failures? Its been a pretty appalling year for them frankly.
What, the one tyre failure all race on the loaded tyre (remember anti-clockwise so most corners you turn left)
We don’t know if it was debris or setup issue

I will grant you Pirelli haven’t covered themselves in glory, but at least they’re not Michelin....

Sure, if you only look at one race this season. Its not like there haven't been any other failures. As usual it was a tyre meant to be well within its life.
