**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

Well that is the debate! You get 6 exclusive units, a map and a fancy box. About it really. I have the special forces edition and love it :)

ok, one site has an exlusive code for USS Constitution. So is that included within these 6 units, i.e. every special edition owner gets 5 of the same units, plus one exclusive vessel dending where they got the game from?

No, special forces edition has 6 special units. Then I think some stores have unique codes for different units that they can give. Confusing or what!

Special forces units:
# HMS Victory: The Royal Navy’s most distinguished and formidable first rate ship of the line; Lord Nelson’s 104 gun flagship is one of the most heavily armed ships of the 18th Century.
# Rogers’ Rangers: Major Robert Rogers’ company of rangers are highly trained elite light infantry, specialising in reconnaissance and special operations. They are extremely mobile in even the most challenging environments.
# Ottoman Organ Gun: A viciously powerful field gun, able to inflict incredible damage on the opposing army. Emphatic proof of the Ottoman Empire’s advanced knowledge of gunpowder and firearms technology.
# Ghoorkas:"Better to die than be a coward" has been the motto of these elite Nepalese soldiers for centuries. Disciplined, tough and courageous, they carry a deadly 18-inch long, curved knife known as the kukri.
# Corso Terrestre Guerillas: An independent light infantry guerrilla regiment, experienced in skirmish and stealth tactics. Surprise raids and ambushes are the guerillas’ favoured tactics, a way to compensate for their limited number and light armour.
# Bulkeley's Regiment: A French unit of Irish mercenaries with a fearsome reputation for hardiness. Exceptionally tough and resilient, they make for a highly flexible and dependable regiment.

hmmph bugs.

No nation will put an army on ships, so Britain will never be attacked if you are them.
Weird ship bug where they become immovable, only choice is to destroy them.
LONG LONG slowdown when clicking ships and sometimes armies later in the game I'm talking 30+ seconds where the game freezes.
Crashes on clicking units grr.
Oh and the AI whilst I think it's ok it has a rather unfair advantage of knowing when u tell artillery to attack them. Try firing artillery at their general or something and before any cannonballs fly they will purposely move.

Atm I think it's kinda too easy. Playing as the Dutch conquered all of India, all of south america, france, spain, half of germany. And it's only 1765

so, is it going to be a massive disadvantage if i only but the standard edition one? I have never played the total war series, that means im likely to get my arse handed to me which ever version I have lol.

Can people live without these special units? are they a gimmick to get me to waste another tenner? :p

Oxy - No, you will not be at a disadvantage. The special units aren't all that great tbh.

Crilly - Yeah, I get all those bugs too, but they will be fixed soon! What difficulty are you playing on?

Squark - You have to meet the special requirements for each unit. e.g. some units you can only recruit in certain regions e.g. Rogers’ Rangers. Can't remember all the requirements off the top of my head! It will say on the activation code sheet that they came with.

Also, do people use skirmish lines effectively or at all?

I don't, I just seem to keep everyone in line and blast away before a charge to finish them off.

I've spend some time today looking at the forums over at TWcenter, and spotted a couple of points about Naval battles which clear up some confusion I was having, though I'd post them here in case you aren't all aware:

* Graphics bug means that you can't do damage to sails of other ships at high settings, you have to turn off volumetric (fog) effects. I haven't tried yet, and I don't remember such a settings, I guess it must be depth of field?

* You don't seem to capture enemy ships if you fight the battles yourself and then select "end now" when the battle is over, as it assumes you'd scuttle all ships

ugh and now I have a big army on a ship but everytime i click the ship the game crashes. Guess I'll stop until patches.

I wonder how rushed they were.

I think the special units cant be used online, more of a single player bonus.

Nope, the special units can't be used online. However, given the limited number of units in the game they do greatly add to the variety you will see :).

Oh, and don't base too much off the demo. The final game is much much more optimised.

Do you only get to use earthworks if you're defending? Do you need to 'unlock' them in some way?
You get them if your army is stationed in the same place for at least 1 turn and then is attacked. You can tell when you will get to use the defenses as the army will have stacks around it on the campaign map.

Watch out with those stakes, i ran my cavalry into my own stakes one time thinking that it would just slow them down... Nope, it killed them all.
