**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

I'm actually enjoying Empire more than any of the previous Total Wars (although to be honest it was Deus Lo Vult and Stainless Steel mods that I liked most about M2TW rather than vanilla M2TW).

Empire has some AI issues, but I am confident those will either be patched or modded anyway (particularly once the Deus and SS mod teams have fiddled with it), but aside from the AI issues I am actually enjoying the way that Empire plays and its concepts and mechanics. It kind of feels more Grand Strategy style than previous TWs to me.

Though it helps that I like the Empire era more than previous TWs too I expect.

tried the demo last night, I dunno didn't seem anything tactical about the game tbh.

Move unit > Right click > kill ???

Thats it?

Depends what you were expecting I guess, the AI is in severe need of some tweaking, but then thats pretty much always been the case with TW games. No doubt just as with previous TW games the AI will be tweaked either officially or unofficially.

I am having much difficulty capturing the Cherokee territories - I am in 1930 now and have much of North Eastern America, but only two islands in the South, meaning it takes a while to build up a force to face the native armies. At one point I was able to capture the coastal city, however it was quickly won back when they sent three full stacks against my 700 :| The other small islands and a coastal region is owned by Spain, whom I am in the process of 'cleaning' up in Europe.

First thing i did was eradicate the Cherokee, as soon as the mission came up I lobbed an army on a boat, trundled it across to the states took Cherokee territory and then all the other Indian states, in about 12 turns.

hhmmm so thats it? Im not missing anything?

Its basically, flank, charge cavelry, stab stab stab, get foot soldiers to fire there guns from an elevated position pref = win

Seriously thats it?

I enjoyed the demo, but not much to it, is it like risk where its more text based, like taking over a map for world domination?

But those are the basic tactics of war surely? They can't reinvent it.

Those are the basic tenets of war in this particular timeframe - simplified, but fairly accurate. However, implementation is not as simple as you might expect. Sometimes they just won't stand still - and of course you're assuming that you won't just get mobbed!

The battle game is only part of what is on offer. There is also a huge campaign map, covering Europe, North America and India - you need to use diplomacy, trade and research to build your empire up and create new armies and fleets to conquer the world.

Or you could just stab stab stab everything :D

Indeed, i play it for the campaign map and usually autoresolve battles, so there are many ways you can choose to play this.

AI :D

I just won the demo land battle only using the cannon and a couple of cavalry charges.

Moved a single line of troops for the enemy cannon to attack then moved my cannon to wipe out every unit he had.

Thats essentially how 18th century warfare was yes, if the AI was better it would move to counter flanks etc but as I say I am sure the AI will be tweaked just as it was with previous Total Wars. On the whole though yes, thats what battle was like in this era, its pretty much what I expected.

I wish it was that simple on VH/VH or even H/H - I've had some real nightmares recently. I think VH gives them a massive morale boost whilst lowering yours. When playing on the easier settings, I can usually expect three routing units in the front line of a battle group to lead to the rest of them heading for the hills, but recently, I've seen units fighting down to 5 or 10% strength before they even start wavering.

I must say, however, that the most nerve-wracking time I've had in that game, battle-wise, has been fighting the native American tribes. They are tough and awkward. Plus, they are the armies most likely to ignore your carefully laid out ballt eline and approach you from 45 degrees either side - that's damn annoying :D

edit: this post wasn't as much as a response to Tombstone, but more of a supporting comment :)

The american tribes are VERY difficult! Especially in the early game when you have very little in the way of technology. Later on it should become easier...I wiped them out by then though!

What's the best way to counter Native American Lancer cavalry?
I can recommend two ways - either hit them head on with more cavalry than they have, or let them hit your unit (preferably in square), then flank them with another unit and melee - it's the only way I know of. They're pesky :)

guns! and lots of them :p

tie them up in hand to hand with a cheap unit then surround them with line infantry and fire into the mass of men. Or if you have a few cannons, tell them to fire at the unit with explosive shots, or whatever the most devastating shot you have researched at the time

Excellent !

I now have the smoke mod, the blood mod, a few graphics mods, sound effects mod and music mod, a few unit stats mods, increased unit sizes, technology growth slowing mod and have modded the game so that its 4 turns per year instead of 2. Much better. Now I just need the AI tweaked and I will be in heaven :D
