Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

I'm getting annoyed with the standing charge now, for the month of July it was 42% of our total electricity bill (two occupants in a three bedroom house, no gas as we're on heating oil).

I'm guessing this is quite a high percentage and we're a relatively low use household? July usage was exceptionally high for us, I charged the plug in hybrid Jeep Compass I have as a courtesy car (what a truly awful car) a handful of times. Usually there's no car to charge.

SC makes up ~ 50% of our gas bill and 30% of our electricity bill at the moment.

Was having a dig around and cannot see any outcome from the review of SC that they looked at end of 2023

Did see something from the select committee though.
There were a few things added to costs (failed suppliers and some other network change) but that these needed to be added to either unit costs or Sc and all the companies went SC.
I guess its a lot more predictable and easier to plan to collect via SC since its a number they will be able to predict with high certainty.

I was definitely aware some of the increase was due to the cost incurred by the failed suppliers. I do wonder if we'll see a reverse trend when that cost has been fully recovered. The cynic in me says we won't.

Was there ever a figure given what the absolute cost was, which should give a rough time frame this is recovered? Total cost of failed suppliers / (No households * increase is service charge)

SOLR cost is peanuts ... it's the green levy V
just a pity the ofgen director resigned - she might have sorted out the proportion of SC for the low consumption users, just left with the yes men protecting the status quo,
maybe Kier will change ofgen
It's the 50p / day green levy (£170/pa) that we're stil paying, as opposed to using taxes - SOLR still only £19/pa ;

The reasons for the increase in standing charges were given as SOLR and the network costs in the Ofgem review last year.

The network costs were subject to a review in 2021 or something and they made the decision to shift costs from volumetric to standing charges.

Page 6 explains it.

Personally I disagree. I think all costs should be volumetric so the higher your use the more towards the network that you pay.

Higher your usage in volume total or at peak?, since its peak that sets the capacity the network has to be able to supply.
If you mean peak we could agree.

Shifting it to the standing charge also makes long term sense as solar penetration increases.

I’m a high user, I rely on the grid but I consume very little from it because I’ve also got a massive solar array and batteries on my house.

If you shift it all to volumetric rates, you’ll be slapping renters and those who can’t afford the upfront cost of solar while I’ll be deploying my smug face with thanks to my even lower energy bills.

I just got back from our brand new recycling centre. it is v impressive, a massive building the size of a small field.

brand new building as well.... but no solar. seems a huge missed opportunity to me. should have been part of the planning imo

Sure. Just go back to 20p standing charge. Seems fair to me. This 40-50p nonsense needs to stop.

20p isn’t worth 20p anymore.

I’d need to check my spreadsheet but I don’t think I’ve had a 20p standing charge for a good 6 or 7 years. It’s never ever going back to that level, ever.

Ok, 25p then? Lol

Point is that would be a good enough balance.
