Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

It is mad, this is the tracker December 2023 Vs fixed for the next 12 months.

£567 difference, I know it'll be different with usage etc but that's crazy.
Tracker isn't a fixed price so comparison is not true.

Need to look at the average on Dec2023 to get a comparison.

Dec2023 entire year average in my area

New tracker (October) is averaging 22.94 so far on electric and 5.94 on gas.
Fixed is 21.51 on electric and 5.85 on gas.

So far fixed wins. But who knows what's going to happen later in the year. There is another increase coming and gas pricing rising.

I used to time washing machine etc though for cheap days. But may be worth fixing and just forgetting all this faff for now.

Any difference on standing charges?

I'm in the same boat with decent tracker rates coming to an end but haven't looked into different tariffs yet.

Another one here with the renewal email from Octopus. Standing charges are up a bit (South East). Hmmm, what to do..

Gas 27p -> 29p
Elec 48p -> 62p

That's the number's they're quoting me, I'm not sure what to do tbh, Might just wait and see, and sign up nearer the deadline....

interesting. I had an intelligent octopus email a week or so back which mentioned a tiny peak rate increase, but no change to off peak and no.mention of standing charge.

that is a hell of an increase and a tough one to justify.

I thought the SE had the lowest SC or is that London?

My SC is 50.4p/31.8p for Elec/Gas and my region is generally one of the highest by a long margin
50p electric one is one of the cheapest, the average across all regions is now 61p. I'm in southern region and its 62p. South East is 58p on the cap, but other tariffs can vary and tracker is not covered by the caps.

Of course people on old fixes will be different.

Not an old fix - I renewed with my current supplier onto a fix in Oct 2024 for the year.... I have looked at their current "new customer" tariffs for me and its all 64p+ for the Elec SC.

I just had a look at my Dec bill just to check and it shows as 48p/day (50.4 when you add the 5% VAT)

Could they have made a mistake?

You can see the October and January rates here. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/informatio...ce-cap-standing-charges-and-unit-rates-region

They are just averages though, suppliers can just different rates if they want. Maybe the unit rate is a bit higher?

well ive gone and jumped ship (ish)
after a quick call to octopus i changed gas to octopus fixed @5.8p a unit from today, tried last night via the app but failed, called in and they did it manually as its now 6.05p from this morning
and electric tomato lifestyle with a little load shifting at night it should be all good as only use 3-4 units with the standing charge lower it should work out to 20p ish a unit
not sure if its the right choice but will see

not liking the new tracker dec rates at all

Current Tracker / New Tracker / New 12m Fixed

Electric Unit: 22.71p / 23.86p / 22.24p
Electric SC: 53.95p / 66.26p / 66.26p

Gas Unit: 6.33p / 6.31p / 6.22p
Gas SC: 27.47p / 29.76p / 29.67p

(Yorkshire region pricing)

Not much in it, apart from the increase in SC which I think is diabolical from an industry that isn't being regulated sufficiently, but most other utilities aren't either which is a failure of successive governments.
Now do I risk possibly saving on unit prices, but subject to the volatility as normal, or fix for stability as the SC is increased for all so fairly irrelevant in the decision.

I've just fixed for 12 months with 100Green, with a zero exit fee.

We were previously on Flexible Octopus, having become a customer after they bought Shell Energy. We're on heating oil so our tariff has always been electricity only.

Flexible Octopus: 24.98 per unit / 62.22 standing charge
Octopus 12m fixed: 22.25 per unit / 62.22 standing charge
100 Green fixed: 21.525 per unit / 54.96 standing charge

Octopus has our annual usage at 2,623 kWh, so just over OFGEM's classification of low usage. Therefore the reduction in standing charge vs Octopus will help.

We don't have the smart meter capability for time of use tariffs.
