Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Maybe it's about time the poor get help this time. This poor get poorer and rich get richer lifestyle sucks. Lets hope the new plan helps the poor more so than before.

The poor do get help. The problem is that the amount of help they require is huge and you have to balance things out. You can't easily target just the needy. You can't just give people free energy because how much do people get. You can just rely on peoples honesty because people are horribly dishonest.

The cost of energy is insane. Its already being subsidised massively and because the per-unit cap is in effect loads of people won't even try to cut back because they can afford the cap. All that does is increase the public debt.

Its an almost impossible situation but I hope they do find a sensible solution to it.

It might give them time to implement a better plan to support those who need it without placing a massive burden on the state coupled with a junk pound and completely wrecked public services.

The country can't just keep lumping more onto the public debt along with wrecking our currency.

Here's the problem:

The Tories couldn't organise a ****up in a brewery. Having any confidence whatsoever in anything better coming along is a fool's errand and delusional.

Should be multi stranded, but most importantly is supply, more of it simply, and more variety, and more backup
Its coming of course, but its such an open goal for more onshore wind (its quick and easy and very reversible in say 30 years if we have caught up with other sources such as nukes)
More ofshore as well, but that takes a little longer
More investment in storage at all levels, national, regional, local, domestic, businesses. Plenty of techs coming through as well as batteries.

We can work on efficiency, and demand based solutions as well.
Things such as onshore wind can then be wound down if we have fixed the supply and demand equation better in the future.

I agree they are in a really tough spot and it does not matter which flavour of government are in power or how competent they are............

but what infuriates me is it is a mess which was completely predictable and could have been largely avoidable were it not for this governments lack of foresight to push on shore wind and to a certain extent solar more.

Nuclear is less popular with the voters but France are looking pretty good about now with their power..... but government has always been more interested in their retationships with the big oil producers....

so now we are where we are and so even IF they did more of a windfall tax, some borrowing is going to have to happen imo.

but FGS they need to really start pushing renewables more imo, along with storage.

edit.. after saying that i just checked... our electricity is currently less than Frances..... the wind is blowing... but Frances is a lot more stable than ours......

Aren’t half of Frances nuclear reactors currently offline..

i think they are coming back any time now ready for winter. Dont they normally service them in summer - though iirc they had to take more offline than usual due to some issues.
That’s the problem with relying on nuclear - one serious safety issue and they would be screwed..

1 source is not going to cut it, but renewable wind/solar/tidal with decent storage and an underlying nuclear backbone i think would sort us out, esp with interconnects to europe (the chances of it being dull, and doldrums and have nuclear go offline all at once in multple countries seems unlikely)......

any excess which was not needed and if storage was full i guess could be used to make hydrogen.... can never have too much of that.

we are actually in a far better position than most of europe as we are an island. off sure wind is plentiful and cheap.

Something will have to give.

These prices will grind Europe particularly down to nothing.

Shows that at the core natural resources within your borders means so much.
And not selling them off to private corps!

We are stuffed in Europe. Too big a population, too reliant on volatiles countries resources. If this cost keeps up we and many other countries will just accelerate our decline.

We are over populated. I've never agreed with people who say we aren't. Things like this highlight it.

If these prices are the new norm standard of living is going to tank even more than we think. Government help can only go on so long.
I guess vulnerable people will just die?

Time to move to a hotter climate!

It's the problem with all power generation...

You just don't tend to hear about the coal, oil, or gas ones going down for maintenance unless there has been a major incident causing it, and they tend to do more secondary maintenance work on them whilst they're running.

I hope this will be done shortly my electric company just infor me about my contract ending next march and will be price increse from 25pKh to 85pKw OMG. For me is only one option next year shut business down or miracle.
Gah, my energy fixed rate end in June 2023. How unfair!
Get raedy m8 it will cost you a lot.

Still not received a refund of credit and now its even more. "Your account is currently £746.00 in credit."
How long has it been since you requested the credit be paid back? If they don't pay it within 14 days they have pay you a £30 penalty.

Last time I switched supplier and they were slow in both refunding me credit and switching me (held up the process), an email reminding them of the the statutory penalties they now had to pay quickly got me the refund plus the added penalty payments :).

Edit:

My mistake, this may only apply to closed accounts with switching unless someone knows different :(.

Hotter climate will not help it will be water shortage problem soon in those areas.

They said they would refund £264.94 by end of play today, 3 weeks ago. Credit balance has gone up since todays billing today.
