Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Just got our SMETS2 meters fitted. Gas hasn’t connected to the IHD yet but I’ve got electric monitoring. Looks like our base load is about 38W with everything on. Hoping the fridge freezer cycles soon so I can see that impact, but 38W base load is powering VM Hub 4, 2 mesh Wi-Fi APs, a little network switch, the IHD itself, plus the clock/displays on the oven and boiler.

That’s a decent base load right?
That's nice and low!
Mine's about 130w, but more running though. PoE switch, unifi controller, 2 mesh APs, USG, pi4 w/ssd, couple of air filters, a few smart switches, various usb/laptop chargers, screens in standby

I deliberately excluded laptop chargers from the base load as they’re always switched off when not in use, but you reminded me I didn’t have the PC, monitor or speakers switched back on at the wall. So now with PC shut down, monitor in power save and speakers in standby it’s 40W :D

EDIT: I’m doing that little nerdy thing now where I check how much power everything uses. I jump up to just under 180W load with base load plus both the fridge freezer and drinks fridge cycled on. Happy with that. Everything else we run is “luxury” so just gets added on top.

my account with shell is currently £400+ in credit and shell keep putting my direct debit up. they have increased it from £160 to £303 and wont let me put it down any further than £272. its ridiculous!
My account is £1400 in credit despite me attempting to get it refunded (was keeping it there to put towards my batteries). Around a month ago it was saying I should reduce my monthly DD to £68 or something close to that, then they must have changed the formula and it went to increase your monthly DD to about £370. Shell denied my refund based on my DD being lower than this twice, they didn't bother to tell me this though. So I raised a complaint the other day and that's when I got called and when they checked why I hadn't been refunded they noticed that another dept had denied the refund. Seemingly even if complaints put the refund request through again the dept who process it could still cancel it so they suggested I go to whole month billing and then there is no need to block the refund. I said that is fine and now I've got to wait for that to be paid hopefully soon.

I've told them not to close the complaint as I'm still very unhappy that they chose to not process my refund request and not bother to tell me they had done this (twice). I'll be switching away from this mob ASAP.

This is why I pay my bill when it comes in so it just resets to 0, I pay slightly more but I have control and that's the way I am keeping it.

Actually I was £66 in credit this month because of the help which was the first time I have seen credit for a long time :D

Despite the advice I recieved in here about discounts for direct debit payments, (for which I am grateful), it's this sort of post of yours above that's makes me very loathe to change from payment on receipt of bill.

OK, it costs me some extra, but short of stopping a direct debit the payer has limited control and the payee has more control, as above, than I am comfortable with. I am not having a third party build up credit from me at their own whim. In fact I don't want them holding a penny more than I owe at any moment in time :)
I pay on receipt of a bill by direct debit. So what's the problem with doing that? Best of both worlds.

That's fine but most people like building up credit and having a stable bill throughout the year. You don't need to pay by cheque though.

I think as a forum we owe @jpaul an apology as the original nut case who was testing the power usage of every appliance. The whole forum seems to be at it now, lol!

Update on this question, I got mine put into my bank account today.
Thanks. I checked and our DD doesn't go out until the 28th so I guess we won't get it until at least then. It's just a bit confusing that they've decided to bill us now when the app says to submit a meter reading before the 31st!

I wouldn't end DD. Just seems crazy to me. It's cheaper and I don't have to faff around.

I only undit in very special circumstances. Or you just dont/can't pay for your usage

This would be a great price if it was cold and heating was required, but it's not, hence why it's cheap.

What is the Tracker price likely to be in January, when it's minus 5 and demand is so high they are restricting supplies ! -> Probably at the capped price of 22p (gas).
Which means you'll be paying double what everyone else is, when you need it most

Mine is capped at 16p, plus Octopus Tracker gets the EPG discount.

Are those trackers daily or hourly?

In Sweden i can go on a hourly price electric bill. While this means my bills are almost free in off peak hours. It's 1000% more during the rush hours, which really balances it out.

Ofc i can charge the car at night and do laundry after 11pm, but anything else is really on the mercy of supply and demand.

Agile electric is hourly, Gas may be the same.

IF you get something like electric basically free then you can use a home battery to charge up cheaper rate and discharge at the more expensive ones.

That's a decent idea... But the practicality and initial setup cost might be a pain.
I use about 25kw a day of which 10 i can switch off peak. Rest is just normal household things on 24h a day and lights etc....we don't have gas that's why we are heavy users
