Technically inferior, we lack the ability to do the basics, this was shockingly exposed tonight.

As for individual performances, Young and Milner were woeful. Gerrard ran his socks of, mainly tracking back, thought Parker was the holding midfielder in order to free Gerrard.

Rooney was poor, he looked unfit, I have no idea why he appears to be asked to track back like he does, tonight he didn't get tight on Pirlo, he looked like he was in no mans land for large parts of the game.

What now for England?

England need to do what Germany did a few years ago, and reshape their setup, 10 years on they are now reaping the benefits, too many old hacks who are not world class in that team.

4-4-2 was a mistake. It's no good playing 2 strikers when they rarely get the ball, or when your two CM's are fairly old and can't run all day long.

Every time we kept the ball for a bit, we looked good. Unfortunately we hardly had the ball and just got slaughtered.

Pirlo ran the game and didn't break a sweat, which is just shocking really. :(

Change in formation and in personal;

---------------Hart---------------
Walker---Smalling---Cahill---Cole
--------------Jones---------------
-----Cleverley-----Wilshire-----
Ox----------Rooney--------Welbeck

Or something like that

Midfield just isn't good enough to win a Major Tournament.

Young under performed massively and should have been subbed for Ox and Walcott in favor of Milner.

Rooney didn't set the world alight in the matches he played either.

Yeah, players aside that's the sort of formation we needed today.

Rooney will take his chance if he gets one, and the midfield won't be overrun as dramatically.

Unfortunately, no matter what formation we use, our players currently aren't good enough. Hopefully come Brazil 2014 Jones & co will have developed some more and could be more of a force.

it is time to do away with the old guard too, will Hodgson be brave enough to drop Gerrard and Terry?

The guy who got 3 assists, and consistently gave great opportunities for goals + actually scored his penalty. Who you going to replace him with?

England need to pray Wilshire comes back 100% we're desperate for a midfielder with his attributes.

England need to find a proper striker from somewhere as well. Carroll maybe if he can actually get some form for Liverpool.

England should have failed to qualify for the 2002 world cup. If we didn't beat Germany 5-1, then it would possibly have been England taking decisive action rather than them.

Ask Germans after the failure of euro 2000, what finally kicked them into taking action.

What was wrong with Eng?

1. 4-4-2
2. 2 man midfield
3. Telling parker to play advanced of Gerrard
4. Using an un-fit Rooney
5. A. Young .. what did he contribute?
6. Sitting deep, counter attack, with a group of players overall lacking in pace.

.. you could go on, but ultimately we sucked due to a combination of players being un-fit, players not being good enough and an incompetent manager (a little bias being a Liverpool fan? maybe, but he did nothing for 90+ mins to combat the space Pirlo was getting, and thats on the managers head).

I swear it's a mental thing with the current 'old guard'. Stick a bunch of kids in there and watch them play with no fear, chase every ball and show no respect to the opposition.

tbf to Woy though when half the squad pull out through injury he had no choice but to go back to the likes of Terry and Gerrard.

Just not the case. Kids like Oxlade Chamberlain, Walcott, Gardner, Henderson, just don't play the football required. They are more of the same.

edit: in fact, what young England midfielders are there? I suppose I missed out Cleverley.

This tournament really should have been a complete rethink.

Most of the old guard removed and a team put in place to grown before Brazil. Much like the Germans did at the WC.

Injuries to Walker, Wilshere and Cleverley etc didn't make it possible really however.

Well at least Hart, Milner and Lescott get a holiday.

So let's get this right, Hodgson or Wenger or Guidiola is going to get a maximum of two - three weeks with the England squad per season and that will make them into 'Barca'

Get a grip.

Players are not good enough, simple as that.
Please read again, i said both wenger etc would need 2-4 years to rebuild the england team, not 2-4 months

In the 2 months they spend together every year before they go back to their clubs where they spend the vast majority of their time.

What do you think...?

yes in 2-4 years they can, especially if you use hungry up and comming young players instead of big ego ***** like Terry and co.

Look at Germany and Spain. if they can do it, so can we if we have the time and patience and the rigth manager/setup to do so.

Klinsman and the current german manager all had a blueprint plan to completely transform germany into a more attacking attractive side and it took them 3+ years to achieve it.

Klinsman the other day said this himself in a recent interview, saying how he had to completely strip and dismantal and start again with the german national side for them to become more visious and attractive as a attacking side.

Before, Germany where known for just being rock solid in defence, playing as one unit and getting the job done. no fancy one touch passing, none of this barca type football. just pure hard work and discipline. That is what Germany where known for there football but thanks to Klinsman and co, they have transformered the german team into a team that does that and more.

This is why i believe Germany will not only win the euro's but possibly the world cup in 2014.

It takes TIME to develope a national side. it cant be done overnight and i aint saying that am i. i even said that even if they employed wenger or morinho instead of roy, england would have still got knocked out tonight as it takes years not months to build a succesful national side.

England DO HAVE quality players. You cannot come to me and say Gerrard, Terry, Hart, Cole, Rooney are all **** average players when week in week out they wipe the floor in the EPL, they are all world class players, you just need a manager to work with them for a couple of years not months.

to say English players are **** is complete and uttter nonsense. They fantastic players individualy, they just need to be developed as a national side better.

Whether roy can do this i do not know but IMO the FA need to stick with him until the next world cup or get rid of him as in now and bring on a world class manager that can start a fresh.

The manager/lineup doesn't have anything to do with the result England just have 2nd class players and deserve to be outside the top6-8 top teams
