England Euro 2012 post mortem thread.

Someone tell me why Young stayed on the pitch while Wellbeck and Milner were subbed, does the England manger job come with free **** in the eyes?

I don't think you can judge where England finished as a barometer of how well they did in the tournament. They were average against France, average against Sweeden, rubbish against Ukraine and rubbish tonight against Italy. There were teams that performed better that failed to make it out of the group stage!!

Agreed with this. Problem is people seem to be happy/proud with how we've performed ... I don't understand it, we've been average at best and woeful at worst.

But at least we battled hard though right?!

I'd say it was the best way to judge a team at a tournament personally..

So when Greece won Euro 2004 they did it by being the best team in the tournament?

Of course they didn't. England could have gone through tonight and it still wouldn't of changed the fact that they were ****. Extremely lucky but ultimately ****.

Not if you are looking for progress, so that one day England might actually stand a good chance of winning the tournament.

Finishing position is ok, but no one really cares about a QF finish.

I don't want to be hoping for that in 2 years time. Nothing England have shown so far suggest we won;t be trying to a Greece then as well.

Except that wasn't your point. Your point was that you can't base how well we did at at a tournament by how far we go.

Precisely, it shows you how wrong the priorities are for some people. Effort and determination are great assets to have, but nowhere near as important as skill and technique. It's no coincidence that English club football improved no end with the introduction of talented and technical foreign players. English players have lots of spirit and fire, but lack technical ability.

They all have a lot to prove, it's funny how Wilshere seems to have gotten exponentially better since being injured.

Not at all. Wilshere's no (proven) world beater but at least he's played a fair bit of football on a regular basis for Arsenal. Ox and Cleverly on the other hand have barely played a handful of games for Arsenal and Utd, and you couldn't say with any certainty that either would play regularly next season either.

Who knows what Wilshere will be like after a 12 month break. But I'm hoping he opens the season well and he can be quickly picked up by England.

Of course that was my point. England could have done a Greece in this tournament and won the whole thing, it wouldn't of changed the fact that 4 of the games along the way they played **** and didn't actually deserve to win those games.

We're close to something right, stop messing about with Rooney and get a decent ball winning midfielder in on the job an we might actually get somewhere.

Pipe dream though as Rooney is "world class"
