England vs Hungary - When did sportsmen stop playing sport?

I was frustrated by Ian Wrights comments last night not just condoning Gerrard faking a tackle to get the penalty, but worse still praising it. And in a friendly match as well? How cynical can you get?

We were shouting for Hungary to save that penalty, and they did! Good!

When did it become OK for professional sportsmen, paid ridiculous fees, to throw themselves around attempting to hood-wink the ref into giving a penalty. Gerrard and Ian Wright should be ashamed of themselves!

I do not want any part of a team that believes this sort of activity is sport!

When will FIFA start taking action against these idiots who give the game such a bad name? Ban any player doing this for 3-4 games and see how quickly it stops...

I was taken aback by his comments also - at least he was the only one in the studio saying it and his opinion is hardly shared by every supporter of the England team. I too was not unhappy when the penalty was missed - I wanted them to win the game, but not due to cheating.

Sure enough Wright argued we should have scored a few seconds earlier; but we didn't, and that doesn't justify a dive. Good goalkeeping by the other team doesn't entitle us to a penalty :p

The argument that "they do it, so we should do it too" is inherently flawed. Many people commit serious crimes, but that doesn't make them legitimate.

It's a shame that we have to go to these lengths to win a penalty.

The attempted challenge was poor yes however in some ways I can understand where Ian W is coming from I'm sure every other country would happily stitich us up....

It's not just England but it's a shame football is such a woofters game now.

I think it's rather stupid to compare a serious crime (I imagine this is where someone gets injured or killed) to a bloke diving on the floor during a friendly football match.

Okay, granted, it's not a good analogy at all.

I was just trying to get across the basic idea.

The bloke like jumped into the tackle, stevie is not a diver he was avoiding getting his ankles broken! penalty!

Rubbish, it was a poor tackle, but there was no contact at all. It was also the 2nd dive of the game by Gerrard.

Lee Dixon actually said it was a dive.

So he fell down like he had been shot purely to avoid getting his ankles broke?

Righto! :D

the "attempted" tackle was an awful two footed lunge that was dangerous. But the fact remains, there was no contact. The guy slid past Gerrard and Gerrard dived. Talk about biased commentary, nobody even mentioned it.

Gerrard fell over, the ref wrongly awarded a penalty. I agree that it certainly was not a penalty, but Gerrard does not dive. Sometimes when you play football you misplace your feet and just tumble, especially when you run as fast as these guys. I am glad Lampard didn't score the penalty though as it would have not been a fair goal.
