England vs Mexico [24th May 2010] *Spoilers*

Not very convincing at this stage but it will do. I bet the Portuguese aren’t too pleased with their result, 0-0 with the Cape Verde Islands. :D

On that performance I'd say:

I seriously still don't get the Leighton Baines thing... he's just not very good, never has been???
Ledley looked more nervous than I've ever seen him, even so I'd still take him if he recovers quickly enough.
I still don't get the Milner thing...
Carrick isn't half the player that left for Man Utd.
Johnson looks a useful player
Lennon over Walcott everytime and that's not as a biased Spurs fan, it's as an England fan wanting to do well in the WC.
If Rooney gets injured we might aswell just go home.

on paper looking at the results it sounds impressive but the perfomance wasnt , still not sold that england will get far

I thought England were out played in the first half. Really lucky almost to get the two goals, the Mexicans must have been scratching their heads at half time as there had only been one side in it.

Second half, looked more confident and organised, played better but were still completely over run in midfield.

To be honest, Mexico looked like the home team.

Yeah I don't rate Baines, bias perhaps but Konchesky has been better at club level than him, but oh well.

King had a fairly solid game, but as you said looked nervous.

Carrick I don't rate THAT highly, but seems to have been adapted into a different role and now looks confused as to how he should be playing.

Walcott shouldn't even be in the squad.

Agreed about Rooney.

I thought we did awful...2 lucky goals down to extremely poor marking. Obviously the Johnson goal was a very good goal but the team didn't appear to be playing very well. My housemate kept telling me i'm being negative and that we "got the job done" but it's Mexico...they aren't a bad team at all, play a lot of games hence their ranking but they are not a world class team. I thought we should have scored some "proper" goals rather than scuffle in the box and a random header.

Why do people say Walcott has pace, at one point he kicked the ball from around half way to about the edge of the area and ran after it, their left back ran with him the whole way and Walcott didn't "win" the race though he got a soft soft freekick out of it.

For all the pace people say he has, I don't see him beat people for pace easily..... ever. Like twice in his career, sure. Lennon had his best game ever against Sylvinho in his first game for City, slow, old and not match fit, he ran rings around him, who wouldn't have.

If Theo can only beat a guy for pace in the rare game against a slow left back, I don't see this pace everyone talks about. Henry had pace, every game he'd just blow people away, Walcott does it now and then, certainly not often. He also is lazy as hell, doesn't close down well at all and considering his "pace" he should be pressuring the other teams hard.

He's still put in a single good England performance, where the good bits came from 3 shots, 1 or 2 scuffed and quite lucky, from receiving the ball in the box with no one to beat, the rest of that game his touch, running, passing, crossing was awful. Same goes for Arsenal, I remember a great run against Liverpool, and thats about it, 2 minutes here and there in otherwise unimpressive games across 3-4 years is simply not even in the realms of good enough.

Youngs the best winger this country has, by a freaking mile, how he's not first team and certain I don't know, how he's not in the squad is literally unexplainable. Milner, supposedly good, supposedly had a great season, the only thing I saw was Gabby and young looking less good with Milner hogging the ball and not having the pace those two do, he held both of them up a lot of the time. Youngs our fastest winger, he's probably the second fastest English player behind Cole, Theo, SWP, Lennon look fast because they are ickle, but you rarely see them beat fast players in a race, running at 30mph with no strength loses out to the guy who can run 28mph but can stop you getting past because he's stronger, thats where these midgets lose out completely.

Young, fastest winger, best crosser, works incredibly hard defensively, great set piece taker(corner and freekick) good shot, great on the ball, does dive a heck of a lot lately is the only real downside.

Thanks to the OP for opening this thread well ahead of time, so I was ready for the match. Nice one mate.

Wow, Wallcot is getting a beating after that performance. What do the Arsenal fans think, you reckon he'll do justice in the squad?

I'll just leave this here:

I thought the midfield was poor last night, Milner & Carrick didn't seem to have a clue at times and if Parker plays v Japan he's got a great chance of dumping one of them out, well Carrick really.
I haven't really seen much of Baines and after last night I don't really want to see much more, hopefully A. Cole will be fit for all our games.
Ferdinand still isn't right, whether it's just match fitness or his mind is still away with the fairies it's hard to tell but he needs to sort himself out.
Both 'keepers did good enough & Hart looked particularly confident.
Crouch still has the knack for England which is one plus point at least.

Crouchinho - 21 from 38 games for England - 9 goals from Shearer's total and 25 games to get them in :p

But then according to nike:

Wayne Rooney is the second fastest english player behind Gabby.

Great punditry my man

You missed the whole game apart from his goal then?

Because of those two clowns against a decent side we would have been beaten out of sight by half time, Johnson and Baines were being done by everything the Mexicans did, whether it was pace, simple ghosting past them off the ball, trickery with the ball, whether it was in the air, they had literally no answer to anything the Mexican players did, they were beyond a joke.
Baines in particular in the second half looked like he was going to cry.
