England vs Mexico [24th May 2010] *Spoilers*

Came on at half time, didn't really get chance to do anything as England started playing well at that point :p

He looks quite quick though, which is good I suppose!

Did you watch the same game as me?

I didn't think England played "well" at any point, I thought they were dominated by Mexico and were made to look like the away side.

How did Johnson get man of the match? Okay he scored a nice goal, but other then that was constantly beaten by the wingers and was lucky at times.

Same goes for the left back.

Out of the entire England squad, I think Rooney would walk in to other "top" International sides and thats about it, maybe A. Cole.

Another thing, why was there no time given to mexico before kick off, It's not hard to do 5-10 minutes on the Mexican team. I hate this attitude that England are this great International side, the attitude that other teams aren't worthy of a 5 minute evaluation of their side. Lazy television, Lazy journalism.

Tummy, by playing well I meant slightly better. (Poor choice of words)

I thought the overall performance was absolutely dire, you can say "well its a friendly", but that doesn't matter when simple things like passing and such go to hell.

It's somewhat gutted my hopes of us doing any good in the WC Finals, as I said yesterday, just imagine if that was Spain or Brazil, we'd have been 5-0 down at half time just from giving the ball away :(

We just have to hope the Chelsea boys can make the difference we lacked in passing and flair :p

England played ever so slightly better in the second half, due to them closing down Mexico.

The scoreline really flattered England and didn't tell the story of the game, We did counter attack fairly well.

Mexico, this isn't Brasil or Spain?! Utterly destroyed our midfield, they passed and moved quickly, something the England players can never seem to do.

I think having a decent full back in A. Cole will help, as that means it's only Johnson getting skinned. Lampard should well be able to pass and move and offer some kind of link between defence / attack.

Milner just looked so uncomfortable stuck in the middle trying to play deep. Really didn't work imo.

Walcott shouldn't be near the first eleven while Lennon is fit either imo.

I thought Walcott was OK, but Lennon looked very sharp indeed when he came on, I think he deserves to start in South Africa.

I'm quite happy to lay most of the blame on Carrick for our midfield performance! Milner was played totally out of position, and when they swapped him and Stevie G round we were far better. We did really miss Barry, and with Lampard in there we'll be better yet.

Defensively we were pretty damn cack; Baines' lack of pace got exposed a lot, Ledley looked lumbering, Rio looked exactly as dodgy as he has been all season, and Glen Johnson is a winger who has got lost somewhere, and ended up as a right back.

Still, I am reserving judgment for the Japan game, when surely we will see our strongest XI, and hopefully we will put on a much more cohesive display.

can't believe walcott started ahead of Lennon. shocking decision.

personally think Hart should be our No1 against USA. looked very sturdy with his catches, no real test on his saving ability though.

i dont want to see Gerrard anywhere near the starting 11 for sunday, his form of late is terrible and him playing on the left makes very little sense as he spends the majority taking up much needed space in the middle leaving big gaps down our left wing.

something like: Hart, Johnson, King, Terry, Cole, Lennon, Lampard, Parker, Johnston, Rooney, Defoe

would be my starting 11 for sunday with a look towards the opening game. im sick of the usual rubbish in the team who don't perform. i think some other players deserve a chance, Ferdinand should not be allowed anywhere near the starting 11 as he's lost pace and his misjudgements over the past couple of year have been too many. any player who is not playing or performing for his club should not be picked.

that removes: Ferdinand, Carrick, Walcott and Gerrard from the equation in my opinion.

Carrick was embaressing in the midfield yesterday.

just my 2 cents :)

Walcott should not go to the World Cup this time around - and DEFINITELY not last time. But the thing is I can't decide who else should go for right wing. Lennon should go regardless, right wing is still a weak point...so it left actually. VERY surprised Young didn't get a call up.

Hart/Johnson/Terry/King/Cole/Lennon/Lampard/Parker/Cole/Rooney/Defoe would be my squad, but i think Walcott is overrated.

VERY surprised Young didn't get a call up.
I think most people are. Only people that don't seem overly surprised are the Villa supporters. Don't know why but he doesn't get half as much praise from his own supporters as I would expect so perhaps he's just not the player the highlights would suggest?

Yesterday just showed how poor our midfield is without Lampard and someone covering the back 4. We had no foothold in the game until Gerrard came into the middle, and even then we were very poor.
Barry being fit is going to be monumentally important imo, Carrick has shown again he's just not up to the task at the moment and we need someone like Barry to give Lampard freedom.

On that performance I'd say:

I seriously still don't get the Leighton Baines thing... he's just not very good, never has been???
Ledley looked more nervous than I've ever seen him, even so I'd still take him if he recovers quickly enough.
I still don't get the Milner thing...
Carrick isn't half the player that left for Man Utd.
Johnson looks a useful player
Lennon over Walcott everytime and that's not as a biased Spurs fan, it's as an England fan wanting to do well in the WC.
If Rooney gets injured we might aswell just go home.

We have to take them as their simply are not any other options in the Premiership. What we have is it, their are no other options. To many foriegn players and the British ones that would be in the prem 15 years ago are now playing in the xhampionship. Would be good if a lot of british players went to Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy, France etc but they never do so we cannot judge their England potential.

Does anyone else feel kinda scared at the prospect of England being as bad as Scotland in 5 years?

I mean Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Barry, A.Cole, Carragher, King, Joe Cole will all be gone by then. Who on earth is going to replace them?

Relative to Eboue even Bolt is a bit of a snail tbh.

I know DM is a bit of a statto so here's some info on 'no-pace' Walcott

http://www.soccerbible.com/news/gen...-speed-burst-makes-him-olympic-contender.aspx

So the stat is he ran around the outside of a known to be slow Maxwell, and this somehow proves his pace?

Amongst the few links a few of you showed, well, firstly they all randomly come up with a different list of whose fastest, and more importantly they don't say how they do this.

LIkewise I didn't say its impossible he is fast, I said, when on the pitch has he proven he's faster than other people. Again I'll point out, the left back matched him over a 40 yard run as Walcott went after a ball he kicked ahead of him, Walcott rarely beats his man, if he was the fastest player in the league bar none, then why don't we see him beat his man consistantly for pace in every single game he plays?

I said, he doesn't use his pace, his pace is not a weapon. If Bolt played as right wing for Arsenal, but never ran at full speed, and never just kicked the ball beyond the left back and ran after it full pace........ he wouldn't be using his pace as a weapon in the game.

Thats what I was saying, I can remember 2-3 occasions OVER 4 YEARS, where Walcott has produced something purely out of his pace, and a hundred other players do it on a weekly basis.

The list that has him down as the fastest, has Campbell down as the SECOND fastest in the league....... so how many of you think Campbell uses his pace as a weapon, for instance, more effectively than Torres, because the people saying Walcott is the fastest, say Campbell is faster than Torres.

It doesn't tell you how the stats were decided, what they measure, and Walcott's pace is measured over 2 seasons of football? How? They don't say.

Walcott might be fast, but he doesn't run fast WITH THE BALL, Henry/Messi can blow people away for pace WITH the ball, ask Bolt to run in a 100metre line while dribbling a football, honestly, you think he'd be the fastest guy in the world? He'd probably be slower than every single premiership footballer doing so.

All I ever ruddy hear with Walcott, he's useless but his pace is devestating, its his only weapon, without pace he'd be nothing. All I'm saying is, I've yet to see a single game he's for 90 minutes(or even 20 minutes) been such a massive threat down to pace that he's ripped teams apart. dozens of players use the pace they do have more effectively on the wing, I just can't stand people saying, Walcott what pace........ he doesn't ruddy use it. Watch the next game he plays, see when he picks up the ball and a Rooney, Ronaldo, Messi will accelerate to full pace and run around a player, 99 out of a 100 times Walcott will casually jog with the ball and as he approaches a player he slows down rather than go around them, its what he does. I can't understand someone who consistantly refuses to use his pace, being described as a pacey player.

People criticising Walcott ahead of the disgraceful performances by Carrick, Rooney, King et al? Nice to see things don't change :)

Carrick and Milner gave probably the worst CM performance I've ever seen for England, stunned if the former makes the 23

There are always young English players on the books at English football clubs, but it's often cheaper and to bring in players from over seas, they're also better.

Training and coaching over seas at a technical level seem to be far better then that over here, it's the way they are taught to play football.

There are only maybe one or two World Class English players imho, Rooney being one of them.

That wont matter, because thats not englands problem.

The problem is Lamapard and Gerrard are the SAME player, the both play ahead of two ball winning midfielders and only really have to worry about getting forward for their clubs.
They both play behind a front man and two wingers and they both call the shots going forward and they both arrive in the box late.

Unless Capello plays a 4-2-3-1 and makes proper use of the players we have by playing them in the positions, system and style that they are used to, then it will be another dull failure for England.

Heres a question, what style of football does Brazil play?
Or Spain?
Or Germany?
Or France?

Then think to yourself what style of football does england play? Possession football? free flowing attacking football? Does it play a pragmatic style of getting a goal ahead then defending?

The closest definition I can get is "hoof and hope" and they dont do that very well.
Why not? because nobody knows what they should be doing.
