English League Cup Third Round 21-22 September **Spoilers**

Really don't see how even Stoke fans can defend Stoke players when they make tackles like that.

"he's a nice guy really"

Yeah I heard about the Etherington one too, he used to be nice, what has Stoke done to him :(.

The outrageous thing about the other tackle was it was in stoppage time and Stoke were 2 - 0 up. Possibly the most unnecessary tackle we'll see all season, a tackle JUST to hurt the other player, the ball was not reachable. You expect no more though.

Almunia has started the season in outstanding form. Long may it continue

Aye, despite being grumpy and miffed about potentially being moved on, he's looked solid, even commanding at times so far. Strange but true.

you boys must be watching a different keeper, he looks nervous at every set piece and still can't catch a ball to save his life. I despise him and can't wait for us to get a proper keeper, if we was to have given and move gibbs into the 1st team the back line would be sorted.

Yep i have to say Almunia has done very well so far but its only a matter of time before he cocks it up big time and it will be most likely against Chelski or Utd where he will cost us points.

Still id prefer if Wenger got a world class keeper in...Almunia is hardly a world class keeper in all honesty.

Maybe threatening Almunia that he might be 2nd best is the way to go about it:p....seems to have made a difference in the first few games of the season for him:p

Revived his career?

Typical Arsenal fans picking up on one tackle ignoring the fact that he's the most successful winger in the league so far this year.

Ignoring Murphy's straight red that wasn't too?

Awful tackle by Wilko. He's a decent right back but its his decision making and temperament as displayed there which keeps him out of the first team :/

You're entitled to your opinion but I disagree. Given wouldn't sort anything out at Arsenal, if you think Almunia is nervous on set pieces, you should watch Given a little closer. He collects very, very little from set pieces.

I'm interest to know how your measuring this? Goals or assists? I can think of at least 2 'wingers' who have more goals + assists than Etherington ;)

Well obviously he's judging him on reckless tackles, injuries sustained by opposition players, card count, and general thuggishness. Not typical criteria for a winger I know, but he is a Stoke fan, after all. ;)

Assists and crossing accuracy, something ridiculous like 1 out of 20+ of his crosses hasn't reached a Stoke player. ;) ;) ;)

lol, but you missed 'long throw length'

I don't want to bash Stoke specifically, and I'm probably just angry cos Arsenal are losing a player a game to injuries at the moment, but there's no place in the game for tackles that clearly aim to hurt the player on the receiving end. Why the FA can't actually get their act together to retrospectively punish malicious things like that but instead ban the hell out of silly old moaning, ultimately harmless frenchmen, is completely beyond me. Love the game, hate its regulators....

If you are going by assists by a winger, well thats Nani.

I agree Etherington has revived his career, but he is prone to the odd reckless tackle. Both him and Murphy should have been off, although if Etherington was shown the red, Murphy might not have reacted like that.

I don't want to say that Stoke go out and hurt players, but it's no surprise that they are the team injuring players quite often, is it?

He's been excellent thus far this season, have you actually watched all the league games?

yes I have, yes he may be coping now but that will only last so long, that is the problem I have with him NO CONSISTENCY! He does not exactly give confidence to his defense, can't collect crosses as he loves parrying, and I suppose we will see what happens when we face chelsea, but I expect him to crack soon enough.

Exactly this, cech, vandersar, reina, hart, all class keepers. I would rank almunia as one of the worst in the league. A top class team needs a top class keeper.

Maybe, but given is better than almunia without a shadow of a doubt.

People love to make up reasons why Given isn't really that good, he doesn't come out, so what, a keeper doesn't have to come out, he has to keep the ball out of the net.

Some keepers are better at coming out and claiming a ball, others are better at stopping the shot, Given is the best actual shot stopper in the league, if he's less good at collecting crosses and better at shot stopping, why should he rely on the weaker part of his game?

So Almunia comes out, misses the ball, someone gets a shot, no one in goal to save, Given doesn't come out, someone gets a shot Given saves the shot, no goal.

Not wanting to come out for crosses is NOT a weakness, its ONE aspect of goalkeeping, Given is an incredibly good goalkeeper and the only thing that matters is keeping the ball out of the net, not how you keep the ball out of the net, by and large Almunia doesn't keep the ball out of the net, and people have short memories, Alumnia was poor against Liverpool, didn't save a shot into the near post which should have been covered and did a pretty good impression of Flappyhandski at several corners throughout the game.

Since then we've played Blackpool, Blackburn, Braga, Bolton, Sunderland. SO Almunia has looked good, against 4 awful teams playing badly, conceded a not great late goal against Sunderland and didn't at any stage throughout look strong or "collect" the ball as crosses pinged in to Jones/Bent. Hardly a glowing resume for the season so far.

Didn't watch the game then? Jones left Sunderland in the summer, he plays for Stoke now. He was hardly at fault for the goal either.

Clubs should be jumping at the chance to sign Given. He was probably one of the reasons why we didn't get trounced every game for a few year.

We sold him for what £8m? that is cheap for the quality he is
