Enough is enough... Now gnome is comical.

Behind you... Naked!
I have been a solid KDE fan for .. .Well, when did Mandrake 6 come out?

Well, since then. I loved it...

About the time that Mandrake 10 was here, things started to get a bit iffy however, and by teh time KDE 4 was released, that was enough for me... Its utterly disgusting and I hate it.. No, scratch that, I utterly despise it.

I moved to gnome.

I love Gnome, I originally thought that it was quite ugly and I do miss the apps that KDE gave me, but some are perfectly useable under gnome without the KDE code too, to over time I have grown to love it more and more.

Then first of all, ubuntu bent me over and gave me a right going over with that unity rubbish, thankfully I found a way to get around it, but I feel the dammage was done.

I have been using Sabayon on my main PC for some years now, and Ubuntu is a great setup for easy use, but I have now moved away from ubuntu for other reasons too, and so, I deided to splash mint onto that.

Now here we have hit on another issue... Gnome 3.2?

I mean come on! - WTF is this junk? Windows 8?

Stuff it. I no longer care, I have had nothing but getting messed about by plonkers who dont see to actually use a PC and instead design the Operating system for other idiots.

I no longer want anything to do with gnome, I have now gone to XFCE.

Here is the doozie... Windows 7 is perfect. Its not only perfect, its also flawless too!

If Windows 8 keeps on the path that it is on, then that will make it another Vista, and with Linux going that way too, I am starting to wonder if its even worth bothering with PCs at all.

I mean, it certainly looks like the age of the PC has gone over the hill and is now heading on a downward path.

No longer will be see PCs with the good old WIMP GUI, and this is what I love with them.

But these new GUIs now... Its hard to find words that portray my feelings towards the coders without being permanently banned for such filthy language.

XFCE here I come.

SMN: Say no more eh? Its bloody awful.

D Brennen: Yeah I tried LXDE... I got the Mint / Debian version. Its not bad.

Scougar : Yeah I have. I got rid of the Junk and its still not right. Its clearly designed for a non-mouse / touch screen way of working. It is, quite frankly. a lof of old Ball Lucks

I used Gnome 3 for a bit. You do get used to it, but it was the bugs that pushed me away in the end. The thing about Linux is that you're not forced to use anything. That's why it won't go downhill. You get more new users with the easy-to-use interfaces, which means more support, but you still have the option to use a better Window Manager if you want to. I switched to XFCE just because i was sick of Gnome and didn't want the bloat of KDE (although i hear 4.8 is a massive improvement) and after a bit of customization it's probably the best environment i've had.

There will always be hobby programmers churning out brilliant tilling wm's like there aren't already too many as well :p

I love Gnome 3, I also love i3. If you're serious about using your desktop then try and get involved in some tiling window managers and customise your desktop to how you like it.

If you like Win 7 then use Win 7, the beatufy of choice eh? No one owes you anything. How much did that Linux distro cost you?

Apologies, I went back and reread.. I had misread your comment about Windows 8. :o I thought you hadn't tried it, and where praising it lol. Soz.

I agree with the comments about Gnome. Regardless of the interface, I don't know why more effort doesn't go in to actually making it simply to install drivers etc. Too many versions. That is what will hold any Linux implementation back.. no matter the interface.

I do use Win7. I use it because so many games I have not yet managed to get workign on Linux, but if I could... Its gone!

No, admittedly, no one does owe me anything, and as for costs, I have you there because I pay for what I use.

I download games and movies galore, I must have downloaded hundreds of games and certainly thousands of Movies, but not one single pirate copy of anything, will you find in my collection. Everythign thats worth the price, gets my money, if I like the copy, then I will buy the game / Movie, if I dont like it, its gone... Simple as.

Its the same with Linux and anything else... I put my money towards a number of projects.

I used to donate to

KDE ( Stopped when KDE 4 was out )
Sabayon ( about to stop cos thats gone gnome 3 )
Ubuntu ( I donated £25 each distro release until I saw unity, I have not bothered since )
Gnome ( Stopped last month purely because of 3 )

I have a couple of others but I still donate to them, so... Yeah, I have paid $10 a month for some time now, to just gnome alone never mind the others , so yeah, I feel they owe me at least some gratitude.

I really like Gnome 3 now, find it really productive to use. I used to use KDE 3.5.x which was awesome, but 4.x was not...

The only thing I had to mod on was desktop icons, it makes 0 sense to me why both KDE & Gnome killed desktop icons. A stupid design decision.

Unity on the other hand is a disaster.

Fluxbox or a terminal for me.

Agreed on windows 7 though- it does look very slick. It keeps crashing, but then ubuntu did that too last time I tried it.

I use "MATE" at the moment, its a fork of gnome 2 - but im worried at how long it will stay supported!

I've never seen Win7 crash, except through my own actions. I have always been a *nix user at heart but MS done good with 7.

Of course 8 will be dire, it's MS company policy!

Totally agree about KDE and GNOME, they have become a pita to use.

Personally I initially made the shift to XFCE. Now I find myself utterly in love with Openbox.

At work I have AwesomeWM.

I simply don't get this , tiling window managers are optimized for heavy terminal use and most take to them to show off though they would be much better off with something like Openbox / LXDE / XFCE

Personally Tiling doesn't work for my multi monitor setup though I haven't spent enough time tinkering with it yet

The best of bother worlds for me remains, OpenBox and stiller (on demand tiler)

I am a tiling wm user. Its a really nice system but it does take a lot of customization to work well for the individual and it is a bit of a paradigm shift to leave the mouse alone.
