Enough is enough... Now gnome is comical.

Well, for what its worth, while my Laptop has MiNT 11 on it, and that Is using Gnome 2 without the stupidity... Sorry I meant unity, I have to say that I have been utterly knocked back by Linux as of late... So much so, that I have not used it for a while now.

Plus...

What is really worrying is that my main Linux PC has been running Sabayon since 3.5 and I found 5.5 to be the latest stable release, but that too is now running Windows... I mean.. FFS! Windows after all those years!???

I really think that after all these years, that Linux and I are about to depart.

I want so much to stick with it, but for me, its simply too much changes in such a short time space and I am seriously feeling like I am spinning around.

That said. Windows 8 is also the start of my move off PCs altogether! - hell, my Atari Falcon access the internet just as well as my PCs do, plus its a bit more fun.

Have you tried MATE under Mint 13? It feels like gnome2 (as it should as its a fork).

I like it a lot. The best bit of more recent distro's for me are the search facilities. In Mint 13 MATE it feels like gnome2 with a really great search function.

I thought Unity and Gnome 3 were rubbish so went back to Windows 7. I have just installed Windows 8 and WOW you have to check it out to see how something can be done badly! Suddenly Unity and Gnome 3 seem user friendly!! If Windows 8 is forced upon is future I won't have a problem going to Gnome 3 or Unity as they are the lesser evil. Maybe even a Mac OS at this rate! MS have possibly made the biggest mistake of their OS career so far which could cost them dearly in the fight against Apple.

No, tjhey have not, but thats the problem isnt it?

Win8 is designed to be used on mobile devices such as ipad style machines and it forces desktop / Laptop PCs to work in the same way.

All the new waves of Mobile phones work in the same way, and now with Windows 8 workign in the same way, it is a massive move for Microsoft to do such a thing, but it most certainly isnt a bad move for them... Its a brilliant one.

almost every PC user out there is a rank amateur at computers and if their compouter works in the same way as their mobile phones... They are sorted.

For you and I, its a disgusting and painful reminder abotu just how crappy things are getting, but for the vast majority of users, its a good move.

I hate the way its going... I truly do.

Im really no longer impressed with PCs and I am using my Atari more and more. It does everythign my PCs does except gaming and even then, Im only seemingly playing Dawn Of War these days.

I think out of them all Gnome 3 is probably the best one (or should that be least awful lol). Will be interesting to see what KDE come out with next. One thing about Unity and Gnome is that they are fairly easy to pick up, but Windows 8 requires knowledge of hidden gestures, corners all over the place, right clicking to show tabs in Internet Explorer, etc. I wasn't a fan of Unity or Gnome 3 but they weren't hard to pick up and use.

Not sure what Gnome 3 looks like, still on Mint 11, but I know KDE sucks now. KDE 3 is great what ever version OpenSuSE 10 had was great, it was KDE 3 i am thinking. Don't know why the devs have to change it.

I have not installed it, but I know the horror that is Metro, saw some shots. Man, MS is loosing it.

I installed W8 the other day and within seconds I was swearing very loudly at the computer, everything is accessed via Metro which then dumps you back to the desktop so why bother having and just leave the bloody start menu there like it has been since God knows when! Within 10 minutes I wiped the drive and installed W7 again though while I do various things then I am installing Linux to have a play.

I recently installed Ubuntu and I actually quite like Unity. Some applications can bug out when you minimise but otherwise it's alright! :) Saying that, it is kinda lame how application settings aren't displayed within the application window but the top bar instead.

What was the desktop that Ubuntu was using pre-unity? that was my first major experience with Linux and I loved it, upgraded to unity and I had to give up on it. After I fixed my machine I tried installing Mint, but even that doesn't 'feel' right, I couldn't even get simple things done like set up a keyboard shortcut for my thinkvantage button to open a terminal, or create desktop icons.

Why is it that so many developers who try to come out with the latest and greatest thing, often end up ruining something that was great.

That was gnome2 you are talking about - I feel the same. Gnome2 is no longer supported or developed. Fortunately gnome2 was forked and is still getting updates via MATE. If you are looking for a gnome2-like experience then try it. I feel very much at home with the new linux mint mate edition. For a proper old school gnome2 ubuntu experience see here..

The thing is though the LXDE and XFCE and all the other lightweight desktops look awful and don't have the features of gnome.

Sure you can customize them and use little bits of code to get things more functional but really you shouldn't have to.

Install Mint 11 Gnome, then Mint 12 LXDE, immediately you lose right click shares, open as root etc..
