I picked up Prey today. Really good so far, played 20-30 mins. The intro and and even the first few minutes of the game remind me of half life for some reason

IIRC, Amazon provide 99.9% availability, have lots of functionality (eg scale ability, failover and backup capabilities) and with their economies of scale, do it relatively cheaply.
indeed using anything other than Google Cloud AWS or Azure is really silly now days

its far cheaper to have multiple nodes In every region getting 99.9% uptime than building infrastructure in every region & to add to that you employee 90% less staff every year to make suire its running

Could say the same with Game engines, using anything other than than Unreal/Unitysource, Is a bit on the are you really sure line now?

look at COD there engine is so wrong now.
look at frostbite, not up to par
Look at fallout!

Rare cases
Rockstar engine
Horizon Engine

not many ccompanies but in enough resources to ensure engine work as expected now
