Epic is giving away big games for the next few weeks again

i will never understand this view that it is only valve who should have a game launcher (and charge 30% for games sold on it) but that other companies which choose to not pay valve that cut OR who directly choose to rival valve - often taking a far smaller cut - are some how doing something unreasonable.

No one stops them having a launcher, they are free to do so. Customers are free to choose where to shop though, just like any other market.

Steam is still my main go-to for most purchases, but only because of their Linux support. It is less of an issue now though with Lutris / UMU launcher etc and, while I hate having to deal with launchers from some of the other companies because I use Linux, they do mostly work these days. I have purchased from GoG and do like that they are DRM-free, and I do still get the Epic freebies as well when they are available but have never purchased from them. Same goes for Amazon though most of their stuff seems to be Epic & GoG now anyway.

Valve were the company who started this whole nonsense of forcing people to install 3rd party software just to play a game they bought. if anything i blame them for starting the rot of us no longer owning our games but instead buying a licence to play them which can be revoked at any time.

It's psychological. Steam has been around by far the longest, since 2003, so naturally the majority of people have most of their games on the steam platform. People prefer to have their games all in one place rather than using a variety of other launchers if possible. Further launchers sitting in your task tray use system resources.

Note you can add any non-Steam game executable to the Steam launcher.

In addition to which, Steam has many more features that other launchers don't have such as videos, discussion forums, reviews, achievements, streaming, stats etc. It's an all in one, one stop shop.

Personally I dislike using other launchers but am forced to use Battlenet for COD and Diablo, EA app (Origin) for Battlefields, Ubi Connect for Assassins Creeds and Ghost Recon, and Epic Games Store. Never used GOG, but see what a pain it is to have all these launchers?

perhaps.. but when the game is on a disk or a cartridge, or even just a download that i can get and then archive, then practically its as good as owned.

but when it forces you to go through 3rd party authentication servers they have you by the balls...... GOG dont do this, but even then people still prefer to buy from steam :/
Yeah, I prefer Steam, but will happily use Epic or at a pinch, EA if the price difference is enough (although Steam have a proven history and some failsafes over getting ruined by corporate interest... while EA have literally screwed me so bad in the past that I boycotted them for several years)
If you play Ubi, Rockstar or MS games (Forza etc) though, you're using their laucher regardless.

I will say though that the DRM free nature of GoG makes them preferable... and their (or whoever manages their social media) response to the recent law changes in CA (requiring a disclaimer that you have no right to an expectation of continued service) was golden ...

I want all my games on Steam.
I don't care if there are another dozen launchers / stores available, I forget that I own them and play something on Steam when I get a chance to play.
If it's not on Steam, or is something so huge, like WoW or Diablo, then it gets forgotten about.

I loathed the way the Epic Fail Store came along and tried to compete by doing PC exclusives.
I now claim everything they give away in the hope it costs them money.
Never play anything on it.

I agree the epic store front is not as feature rich as steam and i do see your point about exclusives *however* the GOG launcher have shown that Valves grip on the PC gaming mindspace is so strong that people will buy games on steam even when a game is cheaper on GOG AND is DRM free.

with that level of dominance then the only way they could survive is by having some exclusives. Also it isnt like steam does not have a bunch of exclusives on it.

OTOH whilst i am not white knighting Epic, the cut they take from developers is half that of steam, so in that sense they are more supportive of developers than valve is with steam.

end of the day a customer can buy from where ever they like but saying stuff like the post above with Epic fail store and loathing them, and hoping it costs them money.... that is fanboy levels of brainwashing up there with the megadrive vs snes or ST vs Amiga of my era.
The day i can get a DRM free copy of Half life Alyx bought on the GOG store then i would see the argument, but so long as valve has exclusives then others will need them too.

that said even then most of the exclusives are timed anyway (unlike the ones on steam). EA, ubisoft and microsoft have released a large number of their games on steam albiet often not at release

Thats a pity as it means you will never get to play the awesome Alan Wake 2

I have no idea how many I have but use whatever the game needs. It does make finding games a mare.

I tend to use GOG galaxy just to search my database as I have most launchers listed through there. It's saved me money as I tend to nearly buy game son sale but then find I already have it on another game launcher.
I use Heroic launcher which consolidates all Amazon, Epic and GOG games into one launcher (where pretty much every free game comes from these days). Then you have EA for EA games and Ubisoft for Ubisoft games.

Exactly this, as above. Steam is always running so I naturally just play games on Steam.

I forgot I own Alan Wake 2 because it's on Epic. I have had it since launch and only played it for 30 minutes. With the way my work is I will often go over a week without gaming and then when I have time I can never remember what game I was playing unless I see it there in front of me. I bought Stalker 2 on release and have been playing that and only remembered Alan Wake existed because I saw a YouTube video on path tracing and it was featured. But now I am engrossed in Stalker so I'll probably forget about it again by the time I've finished this, especially when all the talk about Indiana Jones is tempting me to try that.

As mentioned above - Heroic Launcher.

Yes you'll need to remember what games you don't have installed, but any that you do have installed it can be set to add an entry into steam automatically for you. It can handle installing games, updating them and can be set to open upon running the game through steam, sit in the tray, and close after you close the game. I've currently got all 25 installed Epic Store games added to steam and I just launch them from my steam library.

So with your example of Alan Wake 2, it'll add it to your steam library, pull art work for it and then you just need to hit play in steam.

Or just manually add it to your steam library - that's always an option :D

As above, VS is now free but only for 24 hours! We’re onto the daily giveaways for Xmas now.
Thanks for this! Did wonder last week if it would be every day and when it wasn't I was just going to check once a week from now on. You've saved me missing VS although I also already own it
