Epic songs

2112 by 'Rush' is my idea of epic,as is The Necromancer - Rush, Stargazer - Rainbow, For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica,Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath,War Pigs - Black Sabbath,Child In Time - Deep Purple,Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin,Victim Of Changes - Judas Priest,Beyond The Realms Of Death - Judas Priest,The Eagle Has Landed - Saxon,Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner - Iron Maiden,Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche.

All old I know but the older classic rock bands just seem to do epic so much more epically! I think the age of ADD has put paid to the writing of long, meandering songs with many tempo/melody changes.I know the likes of Dream Theatre are still writing this sort of stuff but they're definitely in the minority nowadays.

There are plenty of bands from recent years which do that sort of thing: post-rock and post-metal [for want of better pigeonholes] bands like Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Isis, Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan* and more recently Mono to name perhaps the most well-known exponents.

GYBE!'s seminal Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, for instance, comprises of 'only' 4 songs of at least 18 minutes. Anthemic, cinematic, lengthy, densely layered, quiet-loud, huge - whichever way you choose to interpret 'epic', it fits.

Ooh, has no-one mentioned Faith No More's Epic yet? :D

* Their early stuff. Although having said that, "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things" manages to have all those tempo/melody changes AND be from the ADD generation. I maintain that this song is the Bohemian Rhapsody of the 21st Century!

Forgot about Mastodon!:o definitely in the realms of epicness! as I said though bands like this are very much in the minority,Isis to me aren't epic at all! I find them very boring! To be truly epic, surely you have to keep the listener interested and not send them into a soporific trance.:p
Granted though, they do write long meandering songs.

The Eliminating Angel by Lustmord is an example of an 'epic' song. It combines elements of dark ambient with a stirring orchestral rendition that builds up over the course of the song and crashes out with a thunderous bang, before finishing on a slow note. Wonderful stuff.

The song is over eleven minutes long so a complete rendition of it can't be found on Youtube.

There is absolutely nothing epic about the majority of entries in this thread. It's as if a lot of you has forgotten what 'epic' actually means. (note: epic does not mean 'my favourite song')

Whaaaaaaaaaat?! Mastodon epic but Isis not? Surely that's a typo! Mastodon strike me as being fairly straightforward, by the numbers metal, Isis (who I forgot in my initial post in this thread) have written some truely epic songs. Go and listen to Backlit, In Fiction and Grinning Mouths from Panopticon (granted their most recent album is a little bland) and tell my they're not epic!

Theres nothing "by the numbers" about Mastodon. They've always been known by just about everyone who's into metal as having their own sound.

Nothing - they're pretentious tosh.

Exactly, they are just about the most non epic band I could think of.

Sounds like you like uplifting, euphoric music with large sounds crashing in!

Try Sigur Ros, namely Saeglopur
