To sack or not to sack

I expect there will be strict clauses in relation to performance, we know the club were on the verge of sacking him at least once, and actively looked to replace him.

Not really the ideal foundation going forward, and I can see ETH being a bit difficult in the negotiations. But, if as he says he's keen to manage the club, they should find a middle ground somewhere.

not really, id keep open the dialog for the new deal but totally string it along and see how the new season goes.....i remember Ole getting a new contract then sacked a few months later. My expectation is that this lot have better foresight than the previous regime.

"Soon Erik, our negotiator is still on holiday"

"Soon Erik, we're just waiting for a cheque to cash"

Hes not an idiot. The players aren't stupid and you are creating a problem for the manager when you refuse to back him with a new contract. Both manager and the high ups will know that last season cannot happen again and I doubt EtH would want to stay if he isn't doing well. They will hash out a new contract in light of this and it will be a compromise. I don't know why people think this is all really simple stuff. Its like the people saying "just cancel payer X's contract". You can't just cancel someones contract.

Missing the point in some respects imo.

ETH is not, how do I put this, a tactical genius or a decent man manger. I have no faith in him whatsoever.

Is he a decent chap? Yes.

Can he manage this side on to better things.. NO.

The fact he has been given a contract extension is literally moving the deckchairs on the Titanic.

United, with all the changes, should have made a change with ETH. And it's quite as simple as that.

What changes? The changes which aren't actually in place yet?

He took us to third and has won a trophy 2 seasons running. Last season was a disaster, in large part due to injuries. If we were talking about the same season with standard injury issues he would be gone.

You might be right and he isn't the right man and he will be gone by Christmas. The high ups clearly believe that might not be the case though and are working on the assumption that he will be here in a years time and more. If they didn't think this would be the case they would have simply replaced him. Very few managers see out their contracts and leave at the end.

Look, we both want the team to be in a better place right.

When the team was more or less at full strength did it matter in the league?

Do the players want to play for him?

Cups are nice to haves, however, and ironically, it's done more harm than good.

How often did that happen last season? And Casemiro having a shocker of a season wasn't exactly EtHs fault.

Can't say I ever got the impression they didn't.
Fez I do appreciate your input, one of the wiser posters on here tbh.

I won't go over it again as obviously my point is clear.

I'm really looking forward to ETH's direction next season, he's inpsired and inspires those around him, let alone his tactical prowess (*insert disclaimer)

United need to start behaving like a big club, and big clubs are ruthless with both managers and players. Look at Bayern....Tuchel won the Bundlesliga last season....gone now.

Barca, Madrid etc would have sacked ETH for losing a game 7-0 to Liverpool, or 4-0 to Palace. Simply put, we have kept ETH because of the mess we are currently in and don't want to blow £15m on getting rid of him and his staff. That and any of the solid alternatives are not available or attracted to us at this point.

And how is that working out for Bayern? They got rejected by a bunch of managers, begged Tuchel to stay and ended up with a manager that got Burnley relegated.

Kompany will take Bayern further in the Champions League next season than ETH did with Man Utd this season.

Similar situation though as Bayern, stuck with a manager because no better options available, rather than a manager you actually want.

Lets be honest, ETH would have been gone had he not won the FA Cup final.

Thats a strange prediction to make. Thats a bit akin to suggesting that City will end next season higher than Tottenham.

I could take Bayern further than United went in the CL last season. My dead nan could probably do the same. Bayern have a brilliant set of players.
