Ermm how am I supposed to get a job???

I was stuck with this problem for a long time and only had I.T. qualifications.

I went on an 8 week placement for the experience. Try and find placements, apprenticeships, junior positions, assisstant positions.

I managed to get 2 interviews after the placement but wasn't picked sadly. :p

Help out for a few days in a charity shop, sorted.

This is an excellent suggestion. Before I started my career in IT, I had no IT job experience whatsoever. I did some volunteer support work at a school, which promptly got me a real job.

Don't dismiss volunteer work as a starter simply because it's volunteer work!

I've had 2 work experience placements and done some volunteering at a local primary school for children with behaviour and learning needs.

So I have done a bit, not much.

I like helping people, makes me feel good even if they are annoying/hard to communicate with its good to know you've helped someone at the end of the day.

Every time I make the damned effort to go into a store with a CV (on my past CV rounds) all dressed up, I get told by a manager "Hah, who uses CV's anymore? Apply on the website/phone number".

Grrr.

Then you go home, find the website they were talking about and have to fill in a form that takes 30 minutes, which could have just as well been suited to a CV. At least let us upload the CV on the website!

What annoys me is if they don't have any vacancies listed on their website at that moment in time. SORRY! YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUR WEBSITE EVERY DAY BEFORE YOU CAN APPLY! If I could have just handed in a CV at their store, then whenever they needed to hire someone they could first check through a pile of CV's that people have made an effort to leave with them.

OK time for a quick update.

Applied for 4 jobs (3 chistmas jobs, 1 part time)

Also went into 5 stores locally asking them politely if they might need an extra hand over the christmas period.

Sent in applications mid-late September.

Haven't heard a single thing :(

It's a harsh time right now. I'm currently in the same boat as you. Although I do have experience in the retail sector, it seems we aren't the only ones.

Gotta keep looking. :(

Have you phoned the shops after applying? You need to keep the pressure up.

I don't know if its of any use to you, but with Christmas fast approaching Royal Mail have a lot of positions available. Its not going to be exciting, mainly postal sorting roles, mainly at unsociable hours, but its money coming in and perhaps it could lead to something permenant?

I'm doing my a levels at the moment and have lots of exams in January, the last thing I want is awkward working hours. :(

But thanks anyway, I did have a look when applying for the other roles.

They don't all require experience.

They generally hire the people who sound interested in working and come across as having that desire to work and better themselves at said company. If you have a well written CV and speak to other humans in a normal manner I would say you are 80% of the way there to a job in retail.

Well I just spoke to one of my mates who works at a local electronics store (that space shop) it isn't walking distance but I can get the bus/lift.

He said that they have vacancies at the store and to come by and drop a CV off.

Utilities is a good place to start, phone/energy/water - it's a sector which is required (so little chances of going bust/mass lay-offs).

Most of which you can start in the call centre then work up.

Most call centres don't require any experience.

My first job involved calling members of the public asking for meter reads for a previous employer - after 4 months I managed to move up, then another promotion 6 months after, then one more a year later.

Went from £10k to £27.5k in just over 3 years, now moved to a difference company (similar role) on £34k (at 27).

Just take any job at the bottom, but try to make sure it's a place where you are going to have development opportunities - shops/bars/stores/food places all have virtually nothing for development - even the managers are paid a pittance.

Well this is the thing I don't want to come across as impatient.

You won't, you'll come across as keen. Apply, then a week later or so phone them up and ask what they think, offer to go in and speak to them and just come across as keen and wanting to work for them. Other people will be phoning, and it's easier to employ someone keen than have to interview a whole bunch of people who applied but didn't really care (which they will think is the case if you don't get on at them).

lol, its not a scam matey.

I run chat teams for 4 UK gambling sites, 2 are very large and the other 2 are smaller. We're also launching another site soon for a glossy magazine.

We pay people to host the rooms, enforce sites rules, entertain members and advertise our promotions.

We have hosts working from the office and from home.

We are based in Stoke, which you would need to visit for an interview (well newcastle under lyme) but if its a home position you would simply log in and chat.

I can't guarantee you a position, that's not down to me, but I can pass your CV on.

I think the only requirement is over 18 due to the gambling side of things, but I am not too sure on that.

Can I have a job too? :p
Stoke quite far from Colchester mind.

It's crazy, I graduated back in 2009 and every single job interview I went to they were like "What experience do you have?"

Straight out of uni the only experience I had was bar work, and my degree in Marketing.

It's so annoying, it's like a get out clause they use

You can't get experience without a job, but you can't get a job without experience.

Annoys the crap out of me
