Essential Android Apps

I've said it before, without a taskiller my phone slows at less than 40mb so on screen lock my phone kills all tasks except dolphin and a few others I've picked

really helps

Which is what I am getting at. Android "should" start killing tasks to keep performance up, but as you noticed, once below 40mb free it runs like a dog!

So, people then install 3rd party apps to kill tasks, regain some memory and the phone is fine again.

Where as, if you set the threshold higher, Android will kill the tasks before you reach that critical 40mb limit and the phone will not slow down. I'm not sure of the exact level to use, but Autokiller does raise it enough with it's default settings to stop you reaching this critical limit.

I know Android is supposed to be good at memory management, but it just doesn't work that way. I also understand that Linux is supposed to run the same with 20mb free as 200mb, but in reality it doesn't work on android phones with smaller amounts of ram.

Seriously, ditch the task killer and install Autokiller. There's a reason the threshold has been changed by a few Rom Modders, the phone simply works better when they do so!

Right, looking for a music player that doesn't load the album/artist art cause the stock music player on my Samsung Galaxy S does and it's lagging when I scroll through. mixzing looks good but have to pay $7 for the non ad version and wondering if it's worth it, or if people are using other music players they wanna recommend!

I use Tune Wiki, and it doesn't lag one bit.

FTP server for your phone and access through a network drive on your computer. Don't have to connect my cable now to transfer songs etc.

installed swiFTP for free.

In Windows 7, Computer, I right clicked in an empty space 'Add Network Location', entered the FTP details and voila, no more cable to copy songs across.

Has anybody managed to get PSX4Droid working?
I have ripped FF8 from my disc and I put it on, but it doesn't work :(

I have found and loaded the bios file as well!

Just installed me a SOWPODS lookup for when we play scrabble every couple of weeks at Frank's Bar. It pleases me that people make simple little apps like that for free.

Are you running a custom ROM ?, it looks as though it doesnt work with some ROMs, im using Open desire 2.3a and it wont work for me and looking at different forums it wont work for anyone on this ROM.

Ive seen reports that people have tried other ROMs and they have been fine and even Open desire 1.6 is fine.

Im guessing but this may be one of the reasons AdamG hasnt released OD 2.4 yet.

Nope, not running any custom ROMs, have decided to keep it stock

With swiFTP how do you actually send the stuff across?
I can view all my files through my browser, but I don't know how to send anything across

You can't via the browser.

Either access it via a folder in Windows or download something like Filezilla :)

Also, you can add your phone as a network location if you go into My Computer and right click > add Network Location. Then you can access your phone in 1/2 clicks :) (Which then you also create a sendto shortcut if you wish, for even faster transfers)

Im off on holiday and would like to make calls across wifi. Does anyone know an app like fringe/skype that will work on the nexus 1?

and Market

My course wasn't on it but i mapped it from the website in about 20 mins, almost all others in my area are already there

Went out for a round yesterday and it was accurate for hole distance, very good from the fairway, tells you how far you've hit and cost me $1.99

It was always within 1-2 yard of my mates skycaddie which is £250+ depending on model, he went a funny colour when he saw how good it was

The app itself was reasonable on the battery, about 30% for 3hr15min round, GPS is the drain here, may be worse if you wanted to look at the course from the satellite view and require data,

Overall well pleased, could do with a few tweaks and a part to keep scores
