Divx isn't supported just yet. It will be released the same time 720p recording is released.

As firefox is still in beta, don't expect too much. Reviews haven't been that complimentary. Opera's suppose to be the fastest but multi touch is lack as such just now therefore i use the inbuilt HTC as it does the job.

Can't answer the other questions i'm afraid :(

i'm a bit of an android newb, whats the benefit of all the backup apps people seem to use ?

Google syncs all your contacts/mail and any apps you might lose can be downloaded again from the market, what are people actually backing up ?

Nandroid can backup a rooted phone so you can flash a 3rd party firmware to the phone then if you don't like it return your phone to the original condition including all apps, emails, texts, etc.

Wavesecure (and other online backup programs) are backing up your data to their servers so that it is nice and safe there. If you wipe your phone (eg. with the remote wipe function builtin to wavesecure) then you can restore the SMS, contacts, call log to your phone. The theory is that if your phone is lost you can wipe it, then if it is returned to you then you can restore it.

I'm not backing up anything.

Everything i have is up in the Google cloud so i don't see a point...???

[edit] - Apart from Wavesecure, which looks like a fantastic program!

The point is that you can restore your phone to the exact configuration that you had it at. Relying on the cloud doesn't do that, you would have to reconfigure your phone settings and all your app settings, after reinstalling them all first.

Not everyone needs or wants this feature, but I'm sure you can see it would be a God send for people who wanted to try out the 3rd party firmware out there (there are loads of them and many require you to wipe your device first) and then return to their tried and tested configuration.

That's why i edited my post and said Wavesecure :)

Have you used it before?

I've backed up with Wavesecure, and I've tracked the phone and also unlocked it once when my SIM was loose. I haven't done a wipe/restore with Wavesecure. Wavesecure will send text messages to the phone from Singapore which can turn on Wavesecure. Once Wavesecure is running it can turn on GPS and upload the data to the wavesecure website. While offline (ie no intervention from you via Wavesecure website) it will lock the phone and display your preset message about the phone being locked and giving phone numbers that can be used to return the phone. If the phone is online I saw a feature that could be used to set a custom message on the screen.

I've created a nandroid backup of my device (very easy because it was already rooted when I bought my Hero) by using Home+Power to boot the phone into recovery mode. I haven't done a restore but I've seen enough posts from other to see that people are using it.

If your looking for a nice backup programme then I use Titanium Backup, its free and backsup your whole phone to your sdcard so you can then transfer it to you pc.

It will backup all your contact, all your apps, all the apps settings as well. Very handy if you like to change roms or just want a complete backup of your phone.

EDIT: Also another 2G/3G counter is 3G Watchdog. Doesnt' do WiFi but then im not bothered by that as its free at home. But the 2G/3G counter is nice as it will give you a prediction as to whether you are going to go over your monthly allowance (you can input what your monthly allowance is).

All I'm gonna say is this. Forget the Android Market (if you're running 1.5, heck even if you're running the latest).

Take a look at:

http://www.appbrain.com/

Browse through apps from your PC browser, install the software on your phone, tell the website what you want to download through your PC, it gets pushed to the phone and when you open the appbrain app, it'll allow you to download and install the software you've picked out.

This is probably common knowledge so apologies if you knew about it already. But I just found it and it's a frickin god send!

Is this a mirror of the Android Market, that has different functionality or is it a totally different market? Been wanting the market to have a 'search by rank/download/date' function for ages.

I honestly can't tell. It seems to have everything the Market does, you need to sign in with a Google account so I can't help but think it's a mirror of the Market.

It's definately worth bookmarking though, worked flawlessly for me.

Nandroid backup is win. Allows me to have several Roms on the go at once. At the moment I have Cyanogen and Modaco's Desire port on there so that when I get bored of one or need features in the other I can easily swap. So, so much easier than having to set the entire phone up every time I want to change roms.

I have a tomtom for that ;)

is there an app like on the iPhone that keeps track of your monthly allowance(for the mins and txt, got netcounter for the data) so don't have to keep going to the o2 website or txt?

so far downloaded 20 or so free apps since getting the desire on tuesday, got like 63mb left on the internal storage.

Who wants to get google turn by turn on their device?

Download http://jetdl.com/download/+Maps4+1+0+/32lje

Install it using "appinstaller" from the marketplace

Make sure you have text to speech installed (settings -> text to speech -> install), and then install "TTS server extended"

I find the navigation on mines tells me to take the exit, corner, etc either when i hit it or after i passed it!

BUT round a bouts are called traffic circles :D love it!
