Essential Android Apps

If you read the last page you will see quite a few posts on that! :p

My thoughts:

Don't like boat because of the UI, just looks like safari on the iphone...............

Plus the quick controls for ICS based browsers are too good to give up!

After having played with both apex and nova now, I have also ended up using apex as my primary launcher now.

- No matter what I did with the margins and grid etc. the widgets just didn't look quite right when compared to apex (using the same margins as well)
- the glow when you select a dock icon doesn't look as nice as apex either (not really an issue, but it annoys me..... :o :p)
- when activating the shortcut for qbright on nova, the widgets reload (go blank and come up saying "LOADING" every time after a brightness has been selected (not a massive issue again, as they load instantly anyway), where as with apex the homescreen just goes blank for like a milli second after you choose a brightness mode
- It is good to have the app drawers back on nova, however, it looks so bland and rather unpleasant IMO when the app drawer is opened and no where near the look of go's app drawers, hope it gets improved
- At first I thought there was a lot more features than apex, however, now I am not so sure as after looking at pro version for apex, both seem to be more or less the same, nova maybe has a few more features
- In some areas nova is more polished than apex and in other areas apex is more polished than nova (after todays update)

So pretty much, they are more or less the same from what I can see.

The Spotify app has finally updated, and is largely similar to the beta that's been around for a few months. At least it finally looks better, but you'd think Spotify had never used another media player. You still can't view your entire library or sort by artist, only view each playlist on its own.

Plus it still doesn't work properly with tablets, I have to turn my Transformer to portrait to use it. It appears it's taken them over a year to just change the UI.

I've tried a number of times to move away from Spotify, and all the other services (Rdio/Sony Music Unlimited) had brilliant Android apps, but it's the ability to put my own music into Spotify which keeps me there. Unfortunately.

Those services don't work the same as Spotify though, as I understand it. I want to pay a monthly fee and have access to all the music I can, plus have my own current music collection included in it. I thought with Google Music and Amazon, I'd be back to having to individually purchase the songs I want.

I highly dislike the idea of paying a monthly fee to access music I never own. What is the appeal?

Yes Spotify lets you upload and include the music you do already own. But if that's the case that means you're already buying it from somewhere yet still paying a monthly fee to stream Spotify's music.

Instead, with iTunes, Google Music or Amazon Music you can browse to purchase and own the music, play and stream the music from the desktop/web player on multiple devices.

For me the fact that I don't have to buy any music...

Honestly, if I bought all the tracks I currently listen too, I probably wouldn't spend much for another 4 or 5 months and after about a year it would eventually be cheaper, but I like the simplicity of just adding any track from anywhere.

If you've ever hosted a party and supplied music via Spotify, it's very handy.

"Have you got any...."

"Yeah, of course" :)

True, that's when I use Grooveshark :P
