Essential Android Apps

Now here comes my 'noob' question... I have the Gmail app installed which is great but I have to manually check for mails every so often. Can I not have a method that alerts me to emails? I tried using the built in email app on ICS and configured IMAP, but that went wrong badly... was showing every bloody email I had got in the last year or something :D I just want a facility to alert me to new emails without having to manually check using the Gmail app. Any help would be much appreciated :)

you should have a notification option with gmail, i.e. when launched, select settings, general settings, here you can select notification settings

I had a little trouble finding this option lol, but its there, each time you get an e-mail you get a notification

Found it! Now to test it.......

Thanks :)

Got an issue with mightytext, it's not syncing messages with my phone. I can send a message fine through the web, but it won't display the response even though it's on my phone. Any ideas?
