Under the Root Explorer option in ES File Explorer, did you press "Mount R/W"? You need to do that first before you can modify anything in /system.

Apex is a fantastic launcher, i also hear Nova is good too.

i just switched back from apex to nova for a few reasons; redraws on apex drove me mad, it seemed to use a fair bit more memory than nova, and nova feels snappier.

Definitely Nova. Tried Apex and while it looks a tad more polished, its performance really is rather poor compared to Nova.

Nova for me, love my custom setup. Only thing that bugs me is it'd be nice to be able to set the Play Store button as top-right in the app drawer, just like with the standard AOSP launcher.

Also, Apex doesn't allow for grids with over 10 spaces vertically IIRC, making some layouts difficult.

Overall apex is more polished and has more tweaks/options, animations etc. however, nova is consistently smooth throughout and doesn't have any micro stutter when scrolling back in the app drawer (main reason I don't use apex!)

I use Nova as my primary launcher, however I gave "Action Launcher Pro" a blast and I really liked how the app drawer is setup.

Nova's great, but I do love Launcher 8 for a wp8 theme.
