Essential Android Apps

Got this from the OSF thread so I take no credit: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...-200-with-a-simple-tweak-hands-on-benchmarks/.

SD card read speed went from ~20mb/sec to ~30mb/sec with 2048kb set! I imagine this will start being included in just about EVERY ROM going soon enough, but until then it's just 1 flash away :D (I just flashed and tested, don't have root explorer to try it first). Not bad for free eh?

Will be doing this on my girlfriends phone shortly to test too! :).

Ok great numbers being thrown up by this tweak but is there a tangible difference? Does the phone feel snappier as a result or is it simply specific apps? Eg gallery media players etc

I can't figure out how to sync this calendar widget with my Google calendar - it claims it is but it clearly isn't.

Cheers robbie, guess it won't hurt when it comes to recording video etc so will give it a bash. Owt for nowt as us northeners like to say

just got spb shell, thought id splash out and wow its nice! just makes the phone feel more "alive" which is daft i know.

What phone are you running it on? Mine (X10 on 2.2.1) runs pretty well but some times - takes a little while to get going after doing something. Its so nice to look at!

SPB shell just so reminds me of my old win 6.0 moby from 3+ years ago. :(
They have had time to come up with something different by now.

Tried this on my Desire with RCMixHD Rom - looks the the Rom has been tweaked already with a 4096kb cache which give speeds of between 4.6 and 5.7Mb/s read and between 62.5 and 80.7 Mb/s write.
Changing the cache to 2048 gave write speeds of between 4.2 and 4.3 Mb/s and read of 40.7 to 55.1 Mb/s.
Worth playing about with it seems.

I think having just started up my phone made it actually read slower anyway, I've been consistently getting 50mb/sec now from the original 20mb/sec once the phone has been on a little while :) . Again, it's FREE and has NO DOWNSIDES. There is no reason not to do it, even if it does only help a few apps like gallery, media players etc. Especially if you use A2SD of any kind (starting up the phone with lots of apps - any on the SD card used to take a lot longer before they showed up in the app drawer).

RobPot, if you're already on 4096 then I don't know why you thought reducing it to 2048 would be better? :p . I guess it's been in some ROM's already for a while then... shame they didn't share it with other ROM developers sooner! I think basically the higher you set it the better but over a certain amount you get diminishing returns. 2048 seems to be the most popular sweet spot.

I finally got around to buying Wordfeud, I tried purchasing it through the market on the phone but it hung on authorizing purchase, so I requested a refund and re-entered my CC details in google checkout.

This time I bought it through the Web based market but now it's just on Pending, do I have to wait for the developer to accept payment before I can download it? All seems a bit long winded to me.

Anyone else using Widget Locker ever have issues with it just dying? it doesn't FC or anything, it just stops working... I'm using GenKiller to keep it locked in memory but it just doesn't seem to like me :(

Anyone got any tips/tweaks they'd like to share?

Thanks :)

Good find, I've been using the goal.com app up to now, might give this Uefa one a try.

What's the battery like with it?
Looks very nice, but i can see it draining the battery something chronic! :(
I wonder if the GUI in the video is that smooth because of the fancier GPU in the Nexus S compared to say a Desire, or if its not that demanding?

I'm so tempted to try that spb - but if for some reason I bugger up the refund window or I like it at first, then my phone decides to lag with it then I'm gonna be fuming lol
