Essential iPhone Apps

What would people recommend as a good UPNP media player? Recently got a new router with USB sharing, so would like to be able to stream from that to the iPad & iPhone, but the "itunes media sharing" on it, seems to only play TO Tunes? So UPNP it is I guess?

I'm not aware of any decent UPnP media players or DNLA players on iPhone. I would however highly recommend Stream2Me or even Plex for a complete media server interface. Plex is utterly amazing and populates each item in your media collection with correct cover art and episode/song detail.

Both of these solutions do require a server running on a PC.

Doesn't that require sky go extra for another £5? That's what the sky website says.
Correct. It's a subscription service - free trial for 2 months at the moment then £5 a month. Just beware that you must give 31 days notice to cancel.

For standard users, the 2 device limit still applies and downloading is not available. You can however watch on both devices at the same time - this has always been the case.

Hi all,

I need an app/website recommendation. At the moment if I browse the web at work and find an interesting article I'll email myself the link. I figure there must be an app I can use that I can email and it'll add it to a list of things I need to look at or do? Checking my email for a list of stuff is a bit basic and not very flexible.

I was thinking maybe Evernote or something like that might work?

Thanks

Safari has a built in Reading List now. You click on the normal 'export' button and select 'Add to Reading List'.
This is then accessible anytime from the bookmarks menu and syncs across devices.

If you're browsing outside of Safari/iOS then as mentioned previously there are bookmarklet apps and sites you can use.
I have http://getpocket.com/ Pocket that will save websites and then you can use the Pocket App or other feed-type apps to read what you have saved.

There are browser extensions to save stuff or you can email it to a 'Pocket' address.

Instapaper costs money for the app, Pocket is free. I know which to pick to try it out for a few weeks.

Cheers for the suggestions :)

Some of you guys may remember Verbs IM, a gorgeous Google Talk (and others) client that was plagued with connectivity and reliability issues.

Thought I'd update that while the feature-set hasn't increased, it seems like the reliability issues are sorted. Installed it on an iPod touch and it appears to be working and performing well. This said, the issue I had with it was when switching between 3G and Wi-Fi (when the phone sleeps), it would stop working.

On an unrelated note, do we have an Essential Mac Apps thread? I've tried to find but with no luck...

I use GoodPlayer to watch films and music i have saved on my My Book Live as it plays them from the UPnP twonky

It plays eveything i've tried so far from xvid, divx and ts video which i've recorded from my PC without any problem only thing which is bad is the interface which looks a bit iffy

Coming from Android, I use Airdroid or Wifi File Explorer to transfer files to/from my computer when they are on the same wifi network. Can someone recommend a similar app for iOS that does the same?

edit: Ok just realised that iOS has no file system so what im looking for is non existent :( I did find apps like "photsync" and "phot transfer app" to be quite useful
