Euro 2008 Group A **Spoilers**

We should just agree he wasn't at fault for the third goal in any way at all, he did what any top keeper would have done in that situation.
Not just any top GK, coming out to close the angle is a basic level goalkeeping technique.

That third Turkish goal was great - Im sure Cech shouldnt have rushed out in that situation, if he had stayed on his line it would have been an easy save imo for most premierhip goalies - but the nearer you get to the striker ( out of the area) the odds favour the attacker dramatically

Have you ever played football in your life? :D

No not at all - otherwise other keepers would get lobbed more frequently but they dont

Admit he was already rattled and made another dodgy decision :D

That hasnt got anything to do with it - apart from the fact that several amateur strikers I know very well agree with me (although one is a Liverpool fan, I wont hold it against him on this occasion )

If Cech was to stay on his line the guy would have had pretty much all the goal to aim at as he got closer. Cech tried to narrow the angle, its common sense.

There's a reason PS was so good at 1v1's, he always came off his line and made himself look big, thus making the target smaller.

This is true but you have to draw a line somewhere. Frank is right really, although maybe not in Cech's situation. If the keeper comes too far out to narrow the angle when the player is far out then the player can chip him or make a pass across the keeper. This is different when the player is in or running towards the box as (a) the keeper can close the player down quicker an (b) because the closer in the player is the harder it is for him to chip the keeper.

Well yes, it's not as simple as saying you come off your line, you've done your job. Keepers can get caught out of position by coming too far or not far enough, but what FrankJH seems to be saying is keepers should stay on their line full stop. This is just not true.

If an attacker gets to the point of being one on one with the keeper, all the keeper can do is make the best of a bad situation. The two main ways of doing this are narrowing the angle, and staying on your feet as long as possible.

I said in THAT situation he was wrong - not that its wrong ALL the time

Talk about twisting words

.

The fACT that Cech got caught in no-mans land obviously doenst mean anything

Cech seemed to do well facing penalties not that long ago, so why not keep it as similar to that situation as possible - after all he is in a no lose situation

Top strikers find it difficult to hit the top corner from a moving ball - so that turkish player would have had little chance at all

Still convinced Cech would have stood a better chance saving it being nearer the goal line (whatever the type of strike it ended up being )

Think Torres said it couple weeks ago, that VDS and Cech make it very hard for him to score, because they close down very quickly but more importantly they don't go down so easily.

I can fully understand that - but that was because the defensive four in last night's game was so much higher than it would be in a Prem game (ie gk would have had less ground to cover in a one to one)

The distance was significantly bigger though making this tactic a lot more difficult to accomplish imo thats all
