Alonso got into the side ahead of him on a regular basis around Christmas time (may have been earlier) but got a stupid red card and since hasn't got his place back.

I never said Fabregas couldn't I just think Xavi and Iniesta have the advantage of working together at club level as well, translates well to international level

Kind of, although Iniesta has spent a lot of time in the centre, I dont think Senna has been bad.
 
After the World Cup, Villa continued to be Spain's first choice striker, starting all 11 international matches during 2006–07 season. He also scored an impressive 8 goals from those matches and was Spain's top scorer in Euro 2008 qualifying with 7 goals. He scored the winning goal against Italy with a volley in a friendly match on 26 March 2008. He was included in the squad for EURO 2008, and scored a hatrick in the Spaniards' first match against Russia in Innsbruck on the 10th June, in the 20th, 45th, and 73rd minutes.
