That's true to some extent. Imaging if just a couple with no kids won, they could most probably not go public and never be found out. Just because you win millions doesn't mean you have to go out and buy massive things immediately cash in hand!

The problem here is that the couple have kids, the kids will find out before anyone else does and then they'll talk about it with friends and so on and so forth. The situation changes.

Hey sim the deal was a paid trip on the Virgin Galactic,i would guess to justify the cost i would need a win of 5 million,now fetch my slippers:D

Would be great to do a trip to kennedy space center for a selected few on here who are into the space stuff,maybe get Fox or Glaucus to drive the lads around lol.
 
Why them to drive people around? I want to be driven like a madman, get Gibbo! Everyone else drives like an old man (some even self proclaimed!).

Same here, its just inviting trouble. There was a woman over here won 70 odd million a few years back and last i read she's virtually living as a recluse now, apparently got lots of threatening letters etc.

I'd go public and show it all off. Why not, the odds of winning money like that is vast and why hide it. Would maybe ask one of the TV companies if they wanted to do a reality series on what I done with the money I won. Would be fascinating I think to see a program following winners of such a sum over a year for example after the win.
 
When was the last time a newspaper 'exposed' an anonymous lottery winner?

There was a programme on a while ago about lottery winners and one thing about the ones who went public was that they'd walk in to a pub and everyone expected them to buy a round or give them a few quid etc. If you stay anonymous you avoid that daily hassle.

Sure if you tell some friends, a few extra people might find out but there's a big difference between that and everyone. I could easily move house to the other side of town or the next city or the other end of the country and no-one would know me from Adam. I think that's the difference.

Probably the only advantage to going public is that Camelot help you with the begging letters and financial advice but I'm sure you could afford the latter!

I'd go with the idea of keeping it under my hat for a year while I planned what to do with it and then just telling friends I'd won a smaller amount.

I'd try not go public and just pay off the mortgage of people I know. That means that they can work away without worrying too much as they now have more disposable cash.

Then I'd just get to **** for 6 months, live the dream, come back and buy a few fast cars and a big house. Probably try and keep 'working' be it involved in some sort of cycling team or something.

Would never in a billion years put my name out there. In fact, I'd more than likely take a while to tell family or friends. I don't expect my lifestyle to change drastically anyway. It's not as if I'd be rolling around in a Rolls with a 500k watch and snorting Charlie with 50s. Too many parasites and flies to fend off so I'd rather not have the hassle.

However, good on them. Genuinely happy for the two. :)

It's amazing what hassle such a seemingly great event can have...
kind of reminds me what Eminem said when the big Dollars came rolling in, and people he thought were his friends told him that he had changed and wasn't the same anymore.
He said he was still the same but people around him were different cause everybody wanted cash!! :o

It's not human to be like that.
Personally, I am not interested in anybody else's money and if I won the lottery and was surrounded by beggars, I would have no option to "cut them off".
If its one thing I hate, its scroungers - these people have no self respect.
