EV general discussion

I should probably do some calculations to see if the SEG is worth staying with Octopus for. In 2024 I got paid £161.66 for export. I try and use most of my solar so thats not too bad actually.

yeah I did have a look but could not find any info on export with tomato.
right now am not exporting much but it's only upwards from here
No export on Tomato yet.

I must say I've been happy with the swap. Even got a courtesy call after a week to check I was happy. Admittedly they were fishing for a trust pilot review but still, it was a nice touch.

Very much a YMMV but for some with an EV the non EV variant of the tariff may be even cheaper. You still get 5 hours overnight but peak is a tiny bit cheaper and the second bonus cheap rate is earlier in the evening. At 7kW you can still charge up over 30kWh in a 5 hour period allowing for some charging loss.

Tomato is just a no go for me, I could never make it work vs IOG's extra slots, I import at around 10ppkWh average cost, and even the saving on the SC isn't worth it vs. reduced export.

I'm looking at getting my first EV as it just makes more sense as I commute 5 days a week and would save a lot in fuel by charging at home.

I'm a bit confused by all the charger options however. Am I correct in thinking that pretty much all home chargers will work with any provider assuming you switch to one of their EV tariffs? And the only advantage of going with a charger the company advertises is because you will then be put on a better"smart EV tariff" which are usually cheaper than the usual 7p kwh? Currently with British Gas, but I was thinking about going with the Ohme Home Pro charger then probably switching to Octopus in the future.

Some chargers have other features such as integrating with solar so you can set the charger to only charge your car on solar power. You need to think about what you may need now and potentially in the future.

There's not a lot of tariffs better or cheaper overall than Intelligent Octopus Go for BEV, and the Ohme works great with that as you can use any car at all, since the Ohme is the integration point not the vehicle. Other things to think about, as above, solar integration and things like cable length and if it is attached or swappable.

Ok, thanks for the info. No plans for solar anytime soon and I think I will just go with a 5m attached, should be plenty. Not really sure if I want to go with as far as attached or swappable is concerned. Attached doesn't look as good but gives convenience, but my commute is a 40 mile round trip, so wouldn't need to charge every night, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Something to think about I guess.

Never say never though. I originally bought a Hypervolt 2 with a 5m cable. Eventually I got solar fitted but luckily the Hypervolt has solar integration. My daughter then got an EV and only having a 5m cable became annoying so I had to spend £140 to buy a 10m cable.

Interesting video if you like seeing repairs, or wondering how these new (old) fangled EV's work. Also spot the obvious computer based consumable. :)

How uncanny, whilst picking up or Kia ev6 GT from Brentwood Kia, another guy came and spoke to us, he was also picking up a Kia ev6 GT from there, asked where he was going back to, Southampton, just like us.
What's the chance lol.

just check you have a sufficiently good 4g mobile reception where the ohme will be located - I don't, so it would become dumb - so will be a zappi/similar & network connected.

How much per month does it cost to charge your ev? I’m wondering if I’d save enough in fuel to afford an ev lease

Depends if you charge at home, how many miles you do and what tarriff you are on.
OVO and Octopus currently have c7p kwh tarrifs - I think OVO is anytime but Octopus 5 hours.
If you only charged at home you could run an EV for 10000 miles at a cost of £270 - petrol car would likely be more like £1400. I reckon it's worth about £80/month on a lease.

What do you mean 80/month?

Octopus intelligent go is also ‘anytime’ in that they will give you as much charging you need to get the car charged by the next morning assuming there is enough time between when you plug in and the time you need the car by the next day.

Edit: if you are a private buyer, look in the used market.
