EV general discussion

I get the impression that the ‘Model 2’ is meant to be a compact SUV (like the Nero/Kona is to the EV6/Ionic V) and I would think the business case would be strong for that.

Instead they decided to build a cyber cab which they can’t sell and a cringy robot that is remote controlled.

No one really knows mind and America loves massive cars so given his America first approach to the company, I can see why they have ignored the segment.

I guess the key thing would be who would replace musk, it’s perfectly possible to keep the culture and ethos without the PR nightmare of Musk. This isn’t a recent issue either, pedo guy gate and ‘fund secured’ were years ago.

@TheVoice Are you using the MyRenault app to track delivery of your R5? How long did it take to start showing on there? It’s asking for a VIN or reg number which I have neither of.

I downloaded the app and registered an account after I got the first email from Renault with a Track My Order link, which came about a week after I ordered. I registered with the same email address and details I gave the dealer, and within another week or so the order appeared in the app. It can take a while though, and for some it didn't automatically link the account and the order so they had to wait until the dealer could provide an order number or the VIN in order to manually add it.

As an aside, if you're on Facebook there's an official R5 owners group which has been handy to share tips and info:

he's on the spectrum need to make allowances (bbc have an interesting series about the modern redefinition of Autism)
tesla's being eaten in china &, looks overvalued, seems 675bn compared to byd 110bn, the kingsTrumps new clothes; the self driving capabilities of other cars are matching tesla, geely&co, too.

Maybe tesla needs a luxury figurehead product , despite that lack of product diversity, profit margins not up with byd, equally, nothing to compete with renault 5.

No you don't, he knows exactly what he is doing when he posts on twitter. The defamation of the diver was over a sustained period of time and is why he got nailed for it in court.

He clearly knows how to behave when investors were giving him millions of $ but all the toys go our of the pram if you bruise his ego.

Decent weather so sat at 72-73mph indicated on cruise on 190mile trip in the Cupra. 4.1m/kwh so its an efficent car in my eyes despite the MEB views of some. I cancelled the R5 as the colour wasnt in that spec (zenith error) and left it to think.

Since doing airport runs, cramming a full size bag behind the seat and trying to do the same in a Uber MG ZS etc, realising I need the space and rear leg room, enjoy the drive and it does everything i need..

Just ordered a Cupra Born VZ in the same Vapor Grey, battery up to 79kWh useable at 185kW peak and 330hp. Over the 40k band so tax joy. Went for the optional Tornado wheels too. https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.Jb44G-4-8ukb9IDW7ifnZAHaE9?rs=1&pid=ImgDetMain. Now to wait. Could have got another V2 (but with 59kwh battery and 230hp e-boost) for £100 a month less but YOLO.

I’ve had some quotes for a charger install

£1k for SyncEv or £1300 for Hypervolt. Is the extra £300 worth it?

I don’t think Sync ev works with Intelligent Octopus but I’m probably after a tarif that allows cheap rate overnight for everything and not just the EV as I think it will work out better for the hot tub

What's the difference and why is it worth 30% extra?

I know you can change the colour of the LED lightning bolt in the app

I think it just has more features and more compatibility. I’ve read the app is good and reliable which some seem to struggle with too.

I have the Zappi and had no issues, compatible with solar & battery storage and the several EV's we have/had and it requires no earth rod. The hypervolt is very similar but was more expensive. Works great with Octopus Intelligent Go too.

My model 3 has been with Tesla for a week for them to sort some bits out, pretty impressed they also picked some bits up i didn't know were an issue.
They did;
Temp and humidity sensor replace
Fixed a paint issue on the bumper
Resolved a rattle on the left door (applied anti rattle tape whatever that is)
Replaced wipers, air filters and rotated tires (lazy i know but hey ho)

They also picked up an issue with the AC charge harness which i didn't notice any issues with and they also replaced a boot strut that didn't have enough power again something i didn't know was an issue.

Just wish there was a tesla in Cumbria, driving down to Chester on a bank hol friday was not fun

My I-Pace lease ends in a few weeks and I have begun in earnest to find a replacement. I’m going used this time at around 2 - 2.5 year old so most of the depreciation is over.

I just test drove a 2023 77kWh Born V3 and was impressed with the driving dynamics, comfort and overall quality. There were cheaper V2s and V3s with 58kWh batteries but the longer range would be a nice option, despite lack of middle rear seat. I was convinced I wanted 360 camera, but that’s more because the I-Pace is quite a bit bigger with poor rear visibility and quite hard to judge distance to kerb when parking. Then I saw how decent all round visibility was from the Born and thoughts of needing a 360 camera quickly faded. I guess the problem is if you give a driver decent visibility, all this tech becomes moot.

I also tried a 2023 Megane E-Tech Iconic and it was just not as nice as the Born. A decent EV with a nice quality feel overall but the driving dynamics were lacking. It also felt a lot more cramped and claustrophobic and significantly worse visibility compared to the Born. It did also have a reverse camera with the 360 view, but both were practically useless as they were low res on a smaller screen. This helped confirm my previous point about decent visibility being more important than tech.

I have previously tried a basic spec 2021 ID.3 58kWh and found it OK if a little bland.

Now I keep trying to convince myself the Born V3 is worth the extra at the top end of my budget.

Good to see someone looking at EV for driving dynamics. Agree the born is easy to place on road and much narrower than a ipace.

The 58kWh is 110kg lighter so drives better but if you need range then prob worth it. I mean my V2 is about 1.84 ton and the VZ 1.99 ton

V3 gets the great seats so worth looking at. Was £40 a month more for the V3 when I ordered my V2

Do you guys all buy on pcp? Thus far I have only done cash as can't stomach the interest. Between interest and depreciation around 10K or more gone over 3 years..

I use what ever method works out cheapest for the duration I'd like the vehicle. TCO is what matters not method of finance. Some estimation (guessing) is required obviously.
