EV general discussion

Probably not suitable then and it will need a new or additional cable.

If the garage is detached, it’s probably more cost effective to put it on the side of the house, assuming a standard 5/7/10 meter cable will make it from the charger to your car.
Trouble is the meter and the consumer unit are on the far side of the house to our driveway. We have to book a service for our alarm system soon and looking at the electricians website they also install chargers so I'll kill two birds with one stone, so to speak..

Your scenario is not unique and the usual way they do it is to surface clip a cable round the outside of the house or go up, through the loft and back down the other side.

Loft method usually hides more of the cable but is probably a bit more expensive as it’s more work.

We've also have electric gates to the front of the house attached to its right hand side as you look at the front, which is why I'd prefer a charger around the back as I'll be keeping the car there, but I doubt if the feed would be suitable either as the cable looks thinner.

yes so (surprisingly - born) mine too was a 20A breaker on the main consumer unit and cable marked 2.5mm2 @ 13.2mm dia. (crummy iphone)
which also looking at screwfix site matches their cable dia.

Has anyone put a meter box over their ev charger to protect it from the weather, kids etc?

Was considering a Ohme ePod, but those have a low IP rating and seen some reports of water getting in.

No, that would definitely look pretty ugly.

Personally I’d recommend a charger with the cable attached which are much more convenient. A Hypervolt is still quite small but the cable wraps around the unit and is largely hidden by the faceplate.

Sounds like a similar setup to what we have. The only advantage being that our garden has all the aesthetics of a strip of waste land so before we get it landscaped I'll have a secondary cable to the garage put in and left for if / when I need a proper charger.

Our garden looking from the rear of the lounge to the garage:

Could just put a small metal ‘roof’ over it sealed against the wall to stop driving rain if it’s particularly exposed

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, that shouldn’t be too difficult to trench over. At least you only have a few slabs to lift and relay, the stones can be scraped back and dug under fairly easily.
Unfortunately, at 70 this November, I do not have the physical strength anymore to do such a task, plus I have severe back issues with anything involving lifting and they are really heavy slabs that would need to be lifted and would require a run of cable from the garage to the left of the picture behind the study, up past the dinning and utility rooms until it get to the meter.
So slightly more than just a few..

Had the Tesla mobile service appointment this morning to look at an issue with the passenger side window. I'm mega impressed tbh.

So convenient them coming to me as I work from home and it was all sorted in 10 minutes. So much easer than my dealings with my local BMW dealer.

I didn't even realise this was a thing they did. My Model Y Performance's spoiler is loose, plus i wanted new wipers and a cabin filter.
Set it up via the app, they are coming next week. I'm hoping their mobile charge isn't high, and the spoiler will be replaced or resecured under warranty.

Will wait and see.

Indeed.
Just remember that a minimum of 450mm depth is recommended.

I installed my Tesla Gen 3 Wall charger, Directly into my consumer unit with a new 32A breaker.

However, I'm awaiting National Grid to come and install an Isolation switch, Once they have done so, I'll be creating an EV consumer unit with its own RCBO etc. etc. from a direct feed from the metering cabinet. So that it's more inline with what anyone would expect to see.

For now though, it works fine.

could you have charger elsewhere on house periphery nearer meter, and leave your car on the drive adjacent, when it needs charging.

Totally understand and in all honesty it sounds like a lot of grief and you may get away with just charging off a 3 pin and use Eon Next drive or Octopus ‘regular’ Go.

If you are finding getting the car recharged is problematic, get a charger put in at that point.

It is fairly easy to go overhead with the cable to the garage but of course that does mean you have a thick back cable in the air. You could have course pay someone (e.g. the installer) to dig the hole, it will just cost more.

Have you not had the estimate through in the app? The spoiler should be under warranty as its a common problem from what I've seen

For those using a 3 pin. Do you guys also have a PEN Fault Detection Unit?

These come with wall charger installs. From what I understand even with a 3 pin you still need a PEN Fault Detector.

Most probably don't even know what that is and just charge their car on their drive from a 3 pin.
