EV general discussion

For those using a 3 pin. Do you guys also have a PEN Fault Detection Unit?

These come with wall charger installs. From what I understand even with a 3 pin you still need a PEN Fault Detector.

Most probably don't even know what that is and just charge their car on their drive from a 3 pin.
In practice, no one’s cares.

It’s not required unless the outlet is specifically for EV charging anyway which is unlikely given it’s a 3 pin socket.

Even if it was non-compliant, you’d just unplug it and you are suddenly compliant again. That’s why in practice no one is bothered.

It’s also a bit of an overkill requirement and isn’t needed in many other countries despite the same (tiny) risks being present.

The internet gets a bit jumped up about it when someone mentions a comando + portable 32A charger being cheaper. That’s fine but you are not installing to the same standard or getting like for like features. You get what you pay for and all that.

I would say 99% of people never even heard of it and don't even know what it is.

So a survey for a charger installation is booked with our local electrician for the 2nd July. Spoke to Octopus and the car needs to be setup through the app, will do this on Monday however very much looking forward to when the i4 is delivered..

Bought my charger through octopus and they now want title deeds to prove the 2 parking spaces basically in my front garden actually belong to the house.
If they insist that's going to be a right ball ache to get out of the landlord.

Do we think a local installer would use some common sense when they came out to look at the house?

I've sent these images to octopus in the hope they engage brain.

Totally understand and in all honesty it sounds like a lot of grief and you may get away with just charging off a 3 pin and use Eon Next drive or Octopus ‘regular’ Go.

If you are finding getting the car recharged is problematic, get a charger put in at that point.

It is fairly easy to go overhead with the cable to the garage but of course that does mean you have a thick back cable in the air. You could have course pay someone (e.g. the installer) to dig the hole, it will just cost more.
BMW i4 is compatible with Intelligent Go even on a 3-pin. If the car sits at home for long enough (not sure if cuke2u is retired?) then a 3-pin at 2kW with some nice long cheap rate slots... perfect :p

It's not expensive to get the deeds yourself if the landlord doesn't want to play ball. The photo, unfortunately, doesn't show you anything meaningful in terms of ownership. If anything, if I was shown that in isolation and asked to guess I'd assume it was communal parking.

I've checked the land registry and there's nothing held on there for the house unfortunately or any of the row as they're all owned by the same landlord after he leveled an old bungalow and built them.

Oof... that makes it a bit tricky!

Our house was on the site of an old bungalow, bought as an adjoining plot to a development of seven houses by the developer at the time. He rented it personally for 7 years and then we bought it from him. At the time I rolled the dice as land registry showed the plot of the old bungalow, not that of our house (which incorporated land from the other development). It all worked out fine but it was nearly two years before the title was officially updated.

I've just grabbed the deed for what would have been the bungalow and it shows the full plot up to the road, but I suppose that doesn't prove that they're now all private spaces for each house :o

Brain surgery is simple... If you know how :D
While I'm generally happy to have a go this is not something I'll be having a go at on a house I don't own

Edit: just heard back from a local installer and he's said he's registered for all the govt grants and has never had to mess about with deeds and if I want an actual adult (his exact words ) to come and quote me then let him know

I wasn't expecting it until well into next month at least, but got the call on Tuesday to say it had just arrived and would be ready to collect today. Really happy with how the blue and gold combo turned out, and sort of compliments the yellow on the seats too. I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend. :D

It’s been almost 2 weeks. Still loving it? I can’t stop thinking about these damn things and I haven’t even drive one.

Going to go test drive the BYD Dolphin Surf on Sunday. I have no interest in buying one, but I am very curious to see what the quality is like since carmagzine.co.uk mentioned it many times in their review.

the answer here is pretty simple.
Fit it yourself. lal
so did you buy the tools for attaching cable ferrules, and maybe stripping too, for your install you described earlier - that seemed like a £100 expense or so as I looked at what I'd need
(along w/cable , a pen protected consumer unit and commando socket)

Did you do anything or just talk about it for years ?

I had all those tools already. I install power metering within HV and LV substations.

Cable was £29 for 10M
I have an EV consumer unit to install once National Grid fit an Iso switch. Which was £50 from screwfix.
The 32A breaker was £2.99

208gti seems to be another interpretation of the alfa junior velocee drivetrain with fwd 280bhp and genuine LSD,
coincidental that the newish more efficient vag 550 motor also had 280bhp;

Haven't stumbled across it, but is there a roadmap and specs for the stellantis motors, and like vag is it an efficiency jump, so becomes the must have.
e: can't see the answer but this is interesting
