EV general discussion

208gti seems to be another interpretation of the alfa junior velocee drivetrain with fwd 280bhp and genuine LSD,
coincidental that the newish more efficient vag 550 motor also had 280bhp;

Haven't stumbled across it, but is there a roadmap and specs for the stellantis motors, and like vag is it an efficiency jump, so becomes the must have.
Vag AP550 is also 322hp.

It’s been almost 2 weeks. Still loving it? I can’t stop thinking about these damn things and I haven’t even drive one.

Going to go test drive the BYD Dolphin Surf on Sunday. I have no interest in buying one, but I am very curious to see what the quality is like since carmagzine.co.uk mentioned it many times in their review.

Still very much in the honeymoon phase (and likely will be for a while) but I'm really happy with it. It's effortless to drive but can still be fun and quite engaging when you want it to be, the performance is very impressive and the way it picks up speed still catches me by surprise. Efficiency seems okay too, I'm getting a reported average of about 4.5 miles per kW apparently. I'll be doing a 180 mile drive in a couple of weeks so it'll be good to see how it does as sustained dual carriageway speeds.
The driving position isn't quite as low and "sporty" as my Leon was but it's more comfortable and the seats are much more supportive. The tech and infotainment is good too, I imagine with most cars now doing CarPlay and Android Auto you can probably get most of the same functionality that way but it's good having media apps and stuff like Google Maps all nicely integrated into the displays rather than running off my phone.

The real highlight continues to be the design though, I love how it looks inside and out and I've had several neighbours and people at work comment on it. New car feel aside, sitting in it does feel quite special and although there's some cheaper materials/plastics here and there it overall looks and feels like a much more premium car than my Leon did. I think the dark blue paint helps too as you don't notice the interior painted bits as much as you would with a brighter colour.

Downsides: wind noise at 60-70mph is noticeable, not a huge concern for me as most of my driving is around town with a max of 50mph but if I was doing dual carriageway/motorway driving daily it'd get annoying. Phone charging pad is useless, it charges for a few minutes then stops, then charges again for a few minutes and stops etc. Seems to be a common complaint across various phone models so I assume Renault used a cheap part there. Reversing camera is hilariously low resolution, it still does the job fine but it's functional rather than pretty, and I think it looks worse because the screens themselves are high-res and very crisp otherwise. My last car didn't have one so it's still an upgrade.

Nice little comparison of the small(ish) cars on offer, lacking the Inster, but its not the same price range.

R5 tops the charts unsurprisingly. Will be interesting to see what offers come around after the car have been on the market 6-12 months.

I have to admit I am really tempted to get one of those R5s, it is definitely a 'heart over head' decision but I'm trying to convince the head it also makes sense. I think they look awesome.

We have currently a BMW 630d GT and a Skoda Yeti which my wife drives. We have a 14 month old and will soon have another little one in October. The Yeti is mainly used for family duty and the BMW I commute in, 45-60 minutes on the M11 each way (~36 miles).

I am tempted to chop the Yeti in for a bigger SUV for my wife, an XC60 or something similar, the yeti at the moment takes the pram and not much else, we're going to need a double pram, and it will be a struggle to get it in the yeti.

And for myself I don't need such a massive car to commute in solo. A charger at home is very feasible, and my workplace has a lot of chargers. So I am tempted to get an R5 to commute in. Is this a silly idea? I don't think range will be a problem, at worst it will need to cover 80 miles a day total, and I can charge it at both ends of the journey. Just worried it might not be great on the motorway?

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is why you bought a 630 instead of a Clio in the first place. Then evaluate what has changed since then.

Not saying it's a bad idea, it is just a very different type of car you are considering. Could be that your requirements have changed considerably since you made the purchase in which case an R5 might be a perfect fit for you.

I wanted a comfy cruiser, and it is just that. However it is also absolutely massive. You're right I will consider it more.

I'd check the XC60 boot size, you might be disappointed :p such a big car but pretty small boot actually

Is the R5 on sal sac? If not, I'd buy a used EV instead of a new one if you actually want to save money.

Yeah not sure what it would be. But needs to have a big boot.

We’ll probably swap the yeti first, and I’ll think about whether I want to swap the 6GT for a smaller EV. My company has a Salary sacrifice scheme with octopus, which includes a charger installation. I’ll see if the R5 is on there.

Only Techno trim though.

You could always looks at something similar in size/comfort - Audi e-Tron 55 Quattro. 22-plate £18.5k.

I checked my work one. They have techno, evolution and iconic five in both battery sizes.

Vag AP550 is also 322hp.
guess there are multiple incarnations id7 is 282bhp

but there didn't seem enough information on the equivalent stellantis motor , to see if it is more efficient with the
inhouse hairpin winding/sic that vw 550 had.
electric motors good and bad will become like their petrol equivalent ... tuneability/efficiency/reliability like b58 (mhev version's reliability pending)

Emotorsthe joint venture between Stellantis and Nidec, produces EDM 400V motors at its Termery-Metz plant. These motors cover a wide range of power ratings (80 kW - 210 kW) and equip vehicles on STLA Medium :

Advertising
  • M2 (113 hp): Fiat Grande Panda, Citroën e-C3.
  • M3 (136-156 hp): Alfa Romeo Junior, Fiat 600, Lancia Ypsilon.
  • M4 (210-230 hp): Peugeot e-3008.
  • M4+ (280 hp): Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, Abarth 600e, and future Lancia Ypsilon HF.

It’s an electric motor, you can define how powerful it is up to it’s maximum output in software and/or its inverter configuration. Also in practice, no one’s cares.

The motors in my Long range AWD Model Y is physically identical to that of the performance version.

To put it in an OCUK perspective, they came pre-under clocked ‘for my conscience’ and I can download more power via paid DLC if I was that way inclined.

they aren't the same design for vag version and have hardware improvements too, plus, like you say,
the likes of tesla providing software/tuning power upgrades at a price ... analogous to ICE.
across the lifetime of a platform you will be able to swap out your old one for a newer motor variant.

Didn't the raven motor one have some have some further hardware refinements eventually to be migrated into the mainstream model3
(windings & bearing was it ?)

You need the battery to be able to supply the power to the motor too. You can’t just put a bigger motor in and flash the bios.

Don’t need to use autotrader to learn about EV motors either. Why are you posting the autotrader url?

short memory on discussing technology of ev motors ? I think it's still interesting like for ICE
They did though, slighlty better Cd and the revised rear motor aswell. From memory its something like 14 turns on the stator rather than 12 to improve efficiency by lifting torque output.

Read it. Dont regurgitate it, quoting my post doesn’t count as you adding value. You do see that ?

You’re accusing me of all being stupid or senile I appreciate neither

So the i4 is being transported to us today, I'll post up a pic or two, especially of that front grill ;)
I think I have the charging method all setup correctly, have changed the tariff with octopus and just need to register the car within their app once it is plugged in and charging.
