EV general discussion

JPaul lives in Cambridge doesn't he? insurance should not be a blocker for getting a nice EV (unless a high risk driver for some reason) . I always found insurance in and around Cambridge to be very fair (put it this way I wouldn't insure me with my money on the cars I drove for the price I paid ;) )
His IP doesn't suggest so...

ps4 insurance cost is competitive ? ... since charging rate is imperative , guess you ruled out i4 at that price point.

The single motor insurance seems very competitive, approximately half what I pay now. The dual motor is about 30% more. Not keen on the i4, would have to be an i5.

I have no real logic when it comes to that, I've considered everything from a Model 3 to an i7. The Model 3 seems to stand out in terms of value, and the Polestar 4 I think looks the best inside and out.

There are a lot of used PS4's for sale for £35-38k which is a very attractive price (from Polestar directly, very low miles too).

This will be a scenario where you will need to go and look at both as per what @b0rn2sk8 mentions there are quite different cars which normally don't see any real cross over.

The 4 will be significantly larger on the road (width being the main one) - https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/tesla-model-3-2017-sedan-vs-polestar-4-2023-suv/ (Note - the 4 is ~22cm wider than the model 3 / ~9cm wider than a model Y).

Having seen a few out and about I do like the 4 but the size (width) make it a non starter for me personally. As noted they are available for very attractive prices on the used market (vs new list price) so I can certainly see the appeal.

Just saw my first Gen 3 Nissan Leaf down the village and I like it even less in the flesh. Big, ugly and just looks cheap. No doubt when I take my Gen 2 for it's service in June they will try and sell me one again, no thank you.

I have reserved a Model Y for Friday for test drive, managed to get 4hrs. The main consideration I have is if it will fit on the drive, if it doesn't then it's off the table for now. My first time driving an EV so excited to give it a try.
I am also considering the Scenic E-Tech, it looks a really smart machine but I haven't tried one yet.

Just check it's not in 'chill' mode..
Whilst this is the older model, and LHD, it's close enough to just quickly check:

I test drove an AWD a couple of years ago and found the acceleration a bit limp, hardly quicker than the ID.3 we had at the time, but on realising it was in chill mode, I switched it back to standard and it was nuts..

Joining the EV bandwagon, well my wife is anyway.

She's picking up a Zoe next week and Octopus are fitting an Ohme ePod the week after. :)

Her Mondeo has gone to webuyanycar for more or less scrap value (there was a lot of expensive things going wrong with it!)

I *might* consider changing the Focus ST to something electric, but I still enjoy the car 12 years later. The Smart #3 looks nice.

If it is used make sure it is in warranty, they have a real bad habit of having motor bearing issues after 40k miles, and it is not cheap to fix!

EDIT: Unless it a really old one very cheap, there are loads of other good EV's out there now to consider.

Based off the same platform as the Ariya now IIRC but it looks bigger than it actually is vs the older Leaf, some of that is perception due to the design used (wider stance).

The other issue is the heating system. Quotes to fix are commonly more than the car is worth.

On the topic of Polestar, I'm now weighing up a 4 vs the Model 3. The Model Y deals have worsened so that's off the table now and I don't need the space anyway.

From what I can gather it's a classier, more premium car than the Model 3, but it suffers from two main issues:

- The software is hit and miss, it's improving over time but a lot of people are still having problems.

- People are reporting it often struggles to pull a good charging speed at public chargers? This is more of a worry for me as I'd be using them a fair bit. Software niggles I can deal with.

Both of these are things that Tesla get pretty much spot on, annoyingly.
I've currently got the Polestar 4 LRDM having come from a Model 3 LR. The software on the Tesla is slicker and just works. Polestar isn't bad but isn't as slick. But as a car, its a far better proposition. Smoother ride, quieter, better built, feels more premium, massive inside (and out!). Despite the 100kWh battery, the range isn't great.

both capri and explorer seem to be cheap ways to get into the latest efficient vag 550 drivetrain.2nd hand too, if you want a big SUV;
only saw my first explorer recently and thought - could I drive that down our double parked road; ford dealers more numerous than mg as well.
Just ordered a Capri for myself and an Explorer for the wife, hopefully get both next month.

Was tempted to look at one, does yours have the electro chromatic roof? What sort of range are you seeing in the winter weather?
