EV general discussion

This is my main concern as we (my partner and I) consider getting an EV to go with some planned solar panels/battery on our new house. I feel we'd fall back on my thirsty 140i for longer journeys, and use the EV just to get to work and back, and general shorter trips.

The experiences I've had in colleagues EVs on longer trips hasn't been encouraging.

What experiences are those, and how recent?

Also when you talk about longer trips, are you talking about in one go, or over many days, and what is a long journey to you?

Bought an RSQ8 and get range anxiety too.. at 15 Mpg it feels like the Mway Services are way out of reach when it goes BONG!!!.... :D
I remember the days taking my mates Vanquish S to the coast and back with single figure mpg’zzz. He won’t let me drive his LP740 now!…. :D
We're off to Prestatyn next month for a couple of days in a caravan and it looks like the site has a couple of 22Kw chargers so we're taking the ID3 as the Kona doesn't play nicely with them and fingers crossed they're working as otherwise it looks a little sparse.

The fact I've had to look and pick which car to take based on charger availability means it's definitely still no where near as seamless as ICE never mind what people say.
we were in Anglesey, stopped at Chester services for a brew and topped up on the Gridserve chargers on the way, then used the Tesla Menai chargers on the way back.

Can see there’s a Tesla charging place at Flint Mountain Hotel which may be an option on the way there/back.

So BMW MK quoted me £547 for the first service on the wife's i4, which includes a brake fluid flush, cabin filter, windscreen washer top up and 'vehicle check'. Even after querying this complete BS the best she should do was a 15% discount to £465. I was expecting an increase from my last brake fluid flush they did at £180, but this is taking the ****.

Booked it in at Autoworx instead for £260, which I'll be honest still isn't great for the amount of work being done, but better that what it was.
So they still wan't ICE money for an EV? Mini offered me 5 years of servicing for £99. I guess the dealer has to get his money back somewhere now they are not selling their own stock anymore?

Unfortunately my Kia Niro EV was stolen early hours on Tuesday. They used the gameboy attack. When I woke up I reported it stolen checked the Kia app it was parked up around 10 miles away. I picked it up myself and drove it home. External damage is minimal. Internally they destroyed the glovebox and ripped out the overhead centre console. I assume they were looking for the tracker.

It’s currently with authorised repairer. Car is leased through salary sacrifice. Spoke to lease company and they said I’m not allowed to install a Ghost. I suspect the thieves will try again. I’m thinking of getting a steering lock? Any recommendations? Also if it’s parked up for a few days a wheel clamp. Not sure what else to do. Silly idea but was thinking of putting a Ring motion sensor in the car and linking with my main alarm. May not work. I understand Hyundai have a fix for the attack but Kia doesn’t.

Started to seriously consider an EV as still having issues locating super unleaded in my local area...

I want something preferably dual motored as single motors are typically slower than what i currently drive.
Have been considering the MG xpower as i see them as a bit of a sleeper car <4s to 60 and only a couple of seconds slower around the 'ring than an A45S; and not as likely for jealous people to target. After originally vomitting when i saw them, i must say the looks have grown on me.

What puts me is off is the crazy depreciation on these.
I've always bought my car outright, buying "brand new" has never appealed to me. Have always taken out a small loan over a short duration for my cars.

MG as example, £38k new. two years old examples going for sub 19k with less than 10k miles on the clock.
This theme seems pretty consistent with other EV models too.

ICE cars also generally depreciate but no where near these rates. Any savings in fuelling/charging is somewhat offset by the hit i'd take when it comes to sell.

Leasing schemes appear to be, your paying that new car hit off in monthly installments.

EV grants no longer, zero tax abolishment and then introduction of 3p a mile tax on top (£300 a year for 10k annual is nothing in great scheme but a kick in the nuts really); no wonder people are sticking to what they know/trust.

(As I've said previously), the devil is in the detail.
Most EVs are bought via salary sacrifice/company schemes so the price paid for these comes from pre-tax income.

So, for a 60k car that's "worth" £20k after 3 years...it seems like a £40k depreciation, but this £40k is paid pre-income tax.
If taking into account minimal BIK and 40-45% tax band, the owner only paid about £25k of that £40k depreciation. Without the EV, the rest of the £15k would've been paid as tax to HMRC in any case. So there really isn't any "loss" per se as it wouldn't have affected the take home pay.

Basically a £25k depreciation from a £45k car doesn't sound as bad now, really.

Obviously, the above doesn't apply to private buyers of new EVs, but these buyers are the exceptions and will have to suck it up unfortunately.

Take a wheel off it and leave it on an axle stand. Should make it trickier…

Irrelevant - people stick to what they know from fear and the inability to think critically, or bother learning a new way of doing something, most people can't even do the maths properly in the first place as they have no actual data, just what they roughly think no actual reality. 3p a mile is LOL vs the tax you pay on ICE fuels, not even mentioning the fact you've already paid Tax and NI on the money you are buying it with.

They equal out in the end, and high mileage ICE cars a worthless dumps for the most part where as the EV will be more likely to be working just fine even without a service.

Leasing deals - buy the deal not the car - you missed the epic cheap XPower deals they had before Iran kicked off.

I hadn't heard about the Gameboy theft thing until your Kia got stolen

Looks like my Genesis GV70 is at risk as well. It has a fingerprint scanner that I always thought was a gimmick, but I might enable it.

It's going back in 2 weeks but you never know.

It's a leased car that will be replaced/renewed if it's gone, don't go over the top just don't keep anything valuable in it. There's a point where the hassle you're adding for yourself every time you go to use the car outweighs the additional deterrent effect provided.

You must have much better schemes than anyone I know. Very few people I know have one on a work scheme that works out better than just using a leaseloco regardless of the pre income tax saving. For example both the cars I looked at for us are £100+ more expensive than just using lease loco.

@Kenai point taken. I will get a steering lock as much as I’m not out of pocket because it’s through my company it will affect me insuring my other cars which I own.

@dannyjo22 i had this on a 4 year deal, 10k miles a year. Insurance, servicing, tyres and MOT all covered. £420 a month. Seemed good at the time.

I think I will be leaving IOG now, twice I've been charged at the daytime rate for charging my i4 despite it being set to only charge at 23:30-05:30. However the app is still insisting on setting schedules outside of those times. I emailed Octopus about it at the weekend and they've yet to reply but if they can't be bothered neither can I.
This issue has only started recently since they changed their charging procedures and made it only possible through the mybmw app, I'm still using my commando charger.
I'll try it one more time once the Hypervolt is installed next week and set the charging schedule through the Hypervolt app, but if that also fails then I'll be looking elsewhere.

@cuke2u not sure if it applies to granny charging but for my IOG it will show as peak rates (if charged outside of 2330-0530 slots) for 48 hours or so, but then gets recalculated within 48-72 hours and then these slots become off-peak rates
